I like lending my calcs out because I know they cause confusion. The 49g causes the most confusion with its RPN, but my 89 is just as confusing.

For example I'll set the APD to 30 seconds (something small), hand it to someone, then when it turns off they can't turn the 89 back on again, because the password program TSR (I wrote) will not let the calc turn back on unless certain keys are being held down. It will go on briefly, then turn off imediately.

Also my 89 periodically prints in the status line "It puts the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again.

So people have stopped asking to borrow my calculators.

So that's what you use those TSR's for. That's awesome.

You can do it with an ASM program. I think I remember seeing some in the archives that can set the APD, among other things.

There are several asm programs that can do it but I use one that I wrote myself (not released)

Sure, if by "calculator" you mean "pencil and paper" or "fingers". :-)

Actually, I would lend out my calc if someone really needs it.

Well, only friends ask to borrow it, and they only borrow it for the games. Specifically my own game: cruel (it is in the archives). They are too confused by the 89 to actually ask to do math on it. I remember in 8th, my friend Jonathan created a basic program for it to have a display like the 83+. But everyone had an 83+, because it was required for the course, so no body asked to use my 89.

I go under mode and set the 89 for exact format. it confuses everyone. when you divide:

9/4 the calculator returns 9/4 and never gives decimal answers

I have it set that way, and I like that (it confuses people too ;-)). I prefer fractions over decimals. And, if in a certain instance, I wouldn't want a fraction, you can always hit diamond+enter. That's not such a big deal.

heh. I had no frikkin idea that you could do that. I always set it for "auto" mode so I could have the best of both worlds. In "auto" mode, if there is a decimal in the problem, then it gives you the non-fraction answer. Other wise it gives the exact answer. I think I will leave it in exact mode from now on, because I was always trying to find places to stick the decimal. I would also froget it lots of times.

another way is to include a decimal point. Like if you want 1/2 to come out as .5, then type 1/2. and it will work on auto. Sometimes its easier to explain that than <> to people.

I am very hesitant to lend out my calc. I only do so if I trust the person. I once lent my calc out to a kid (I have an 83, not a plus) and in the time that he used it for his math test, he managed to ally CLEAR MY RAM, eliminating all my progs (stupid 83 w/o archive). I was upset. I had some good stuff on there. Good thing I periodically back it up on my comp.

i don't mind lending out my calc to people in my class because they also have the same calc and i can just take theirs if they brake mine. the only reason they ask for it is because i have a whole bunch of programs and apps and they want to use them. i am willig to give them the stuff but they say that they don't want them because they think that i will just mess up their calc. but i mean c'mon i know more about them then my teacher who's been using them for at least 5 years and i've only had mine since september. o well school is almost over with 3 exam days next week. wahoo! (hat wasn't a wagoo for the exam's)

I never let anyone borrow my calculator because it's not something that I can easily buy. If it gets lost, I am not getting a new one. People who want it usually tell me that they will buy me a new one if they lose it, but they lie. The only time I ever let people use my calculator is when I am right there with them.

When I was in school, I pretty much only lent my calculator when I could watch them, too. I was determined never to let one get stolen. I made sure I kept it with me ALL the time. Either I kept in in my front coat pocket all the time during the winter, or put it in my bag and carried my bag everywhere (I didn't usually have too much stuff in it). That was pretty easy for me, and I never had a calc stolen when I was in school.

You got lucky because I had my TI-83+ Silver Edition stolen Sophomore year. I couldn't do anything about it because I had lent it to so many people that there was no way of finding out what happened. Then I thought I knew who took it and I beat them up, but it turned out I was wrong. I would rather just not risk it.

A couple of hot girls have asked me to use my calculator. But they gave it back after a few seconds and asked me how to use it. (The perks of the 89...)

I use an 83+ so even the blonds can figure it out.

No offence meant.

Right...no offense...
The main reason 89s are seen as complicated is because they're different. I guarantee you, if that home screen came out with the 83s and the blank one (for some odd reason) were on the 89s, people would be wondering where the home screen went. In fact, we'd be having the exact same conversation!
"Dude, where's the home screen?"
"You're already there!"

If I want to confuse people, the HP49g+ comes out. For some reason, RPN just churns some peoples' stomachs. Sometimes, to be even more cruel, I'll even show them how to use it in ALG mode, then quickly switch it to RPN just before I give it to them. They'll be like,

[1] [+]
+ Error: too few arguments
"Uh..."

It's fun making people think they've broken my stuff.

just today the girl i took to prom came into my art class to borrow my calc because she forgot hers, and had to take a physics final... she normally uses an 83+, but i didnt have my 83 on me, so i had to quickly teach her how to use the 89, and i got a hug out of it and everything! But alas, she got a C on the final (the teacher graded them really fast), but shes happy cause she still got a B in the class, which is what she was aiming for.
