[A83] Re: who plays chess?

Proper square-coloring, maybe a beginner-helping mode (not that I need one,
but I mean something like when you select on a certain piece, it will show
all legal moves that it can do), ability to do en passant, castling by
moving king TWO spaces over, grayscale (if possible), material count, drawn
coordinates (maybe), algebraic notation (like d1-h5, etc.),
check/mate/illegal move detection, takeback ability, possibly animation of
stored games, input of moves using keyboard (a-h, 1-8) as well as arrow
keys, link mode, ability to see black on the bottom, not only white (easier
to play this way as black)...

Well, I doubt all of those are necessary or sufficient for a good game, and
a lot of this is in TI-Chess for the TI-89, but I hope it helps!

About your previous message:
a) clock - 5: I don't really think it is necessary at all, but I guess it's
nice to have.
b) grayscale pieces - 7: Only if it contributes to clarity and isn't
distracting.
c) database of games - 4: It can be useful, but the games played on the
calculator don't seem to have much value.
d) on-calc piece set editor - 2: A good piece set should be satisfactory by
itself, but this would be a nice feature if implemented.
e) built-in skins - 1: I don't think it really matters.
f) manually typing in moves - 6: Better to do it as d7-b6, much easier to
implement and unambiguous.
g) numbers and letters = draw coordinates - 8: Likely to be appreciated by
beginners, but it does take away space: without them you can have squares
at 8 pixels vertically.
