Christmas status update
Posted by Magnus on 21 December 2003, 22:45 GMT

Merry Christmas to all those of you who do that kind of stuff. Happy Holidays to those who don't. Just Happy In General to those who don't even get a holiday. Now for a quick status update:

  • We've closed voting on the program of the year. Results will be announced in the beginning of next year.
  • As some of you may have noticed, we've updated our RSS feeds. This includes shaping up the one we always had to conform to new standards, as well as adding three completely new feeds. More will be added on request. We've also added a page describing the process of syndication.
  • Finally, we've been doing a lot of behind-the-scenes updates on our news and comment handling system. While most of these changes have been purely backend and behind the scenes, the first parts are now showing up as advantages for you as the end user. So far, the one large thing is that the five minute delay after posting is gone. Instead, new postings are generally up less than 10 seconds after the comment was posted. There will be a longer delay at times when the server is loaded. More changes in this system are planned - stay tuned.
  • Oh, there's a new survey up.

this is great magnus. the 10 second thing is really nifty, xept i hav to refresh the page twice to wait for it to load. (i love fast internet.) but its better than sitting there and waiting for 5 minutes, then checking to see if there are any updates on the page. ths should also prompt much more rapid discussions and allow people to keep their train of thought more while discussing.

Thanks for fixing the lag on comment posting, Magnus... even if it does slow down a little under heavy loads, it'll still be better than waiting five minutes.

Unless it slows down to 10 minutes... :) Me and my pessimistic ways....

It should never slow down *that* much. Not unless we're talking maybe 2-3 new comments / second... (*please* don't test it)

Hehehehe... that would be fun, but I'm not about to try that. There wouldn't be much of a point anyway, unless I really wanted to annoy everybody for some reason.

Or, anyone with a slower internet connection could rapidly click on the submit button making LOTS of copies of one post...DO NOT TRY THIS!! IT WAS NOT A SERIOUS SUGGESTION!!

AFAIK, it shouldn't work unless something in the logic looking for just this is broken.

Shouldn't make much of a difference. Why? Number of posted comments hardly went up at all at the latest slashdot post. Only reads went up.

Another Christmas Update - Retirement

This is William White. I updated my TI-Basic Porter to be much faster, produce smaller files, and be less of an annoyance. I've also done a few other updates and released a helpful Cross Compatible text for graphics on the 89, 92+, and V200. The best news, and for some, well overdue...I'm retiring from TI programming. That means no new projects, only improving old ones and perhaps helping others here and there. I'm not quitting RBP2 and will continue as it's archivist. I DO plan to write children's books on various subjects and start a real life as a free-lance web designer. Hopefully things will go well and my sanity returns. Thank you all for your (im)patience, it's been inspiring in different ways. Merry Christmas to all, and thanks for your time.

So then I guess that you are not the kid I beat up in elementry school. Just as well.

Why is it that the people here don't like you?

Looking at the way he posted his article, either someone made it VERY clear they didn't like him (something I see odd unless they knew him in person) or he REALLY hates himself...the insanity thing maybe? maybe he has split personalities? I dunno...also, please don't take this offensively. I mean NOTHING by these comments...

Actually, I've a bad rep (snowball effect) from paranks I used to pull. Anyways, my 1st book is coming along nicely with an almost complete layout. I'm quite happy now to not bother with stupid newbs (porting and file grouping isn't sin you guys) and the fact i have a lovely girlfriend. I plan to finish old projects, especially D.A.P. and the Ultimate TI-Basic Tutorial, but not just yet.

I don't know either, I figured it was the millions of DBZ movies that he uploaded.

hey! :-) We must admit at the time of their release they were virtually unprecedented...And in a way still are. My Independence Day (68k) animation is one of the best around. No matter :-D My 1st book is 25% finished.

LOL, I was wondering the same thing, but I was kinda hoping somebody else would ask. :) Though, I'm assuming it's some other way of accessing the site's data... HTML is fine for me.

If you look carefully, you will notice a link in the article text itself that points to a page describing this.
