TI Math Tutor Program Created
Posted by Michael on 10 June 2003, 21:40 GMT

TI has opened an online service called TI Math Tutor. Focusing on "math using your TI-83 Plus," students can pay $39 per hour to have online instruction on almost any math topic. The service allows students also to submit questions anytime, and have them answered within 24 hours.

But does this have enough advantages over traditional tutoring services to become a success for TI?

Hmm...$39 an hour for tutoring over the internet? it's fairly easily to get a tutor for under $30 an hour (or get help from your math teacher after school for free), and a traditional tutor can help you at a larger variety of times...

and how do they guarantee enough tutors will be available at those times?

But the real question is, will Mulanda be the "e-instructor" in question?

Seriously, I can't quite imagine this thing working. Your math teacher is there for a reason.

Indeed. If you're having trouble in math, I'd talk to the teacher before some random person from an electronics company - Which brings me to ask why TI is tutoring students in math rather than calc use. Isn't math kinda outside their expertise (not that it isn't necessary in the electronics industry, but the teaching part ...)

I would *hope* that these math teachers are a little more certified than the ones at my school. BTW, where would one get such certification?

You get certified for teaching by taking (and passing) certain specific college classes. Yes, I know 'certain specific' is redundant. So sue me.

Ha... we hadn't had any Mulanda jokes for awhile. I sure HOPE she isn't the one doing the tutoring. ;-)

I agree. That is way to pricy. I have never known of a math teacher that would not give the student help after school. That is way easier, and cheeper, in fact it is free.

Regardless os the distinct advantage TI would have in refference to knowing the hardware, I think a regular tutor works better. And if someone can't get a tutor, TI is still shipping these calculators with extensive manuals.

I don't see why TI should offer tutoring (especially at that price) for 83+, although they could offer it for the 86 and perhaps some other editions (minus the price)

How true, TI should really offer math tutor using TI-86
and TI-89, etc.
