We're hiring again
Posted by Magnus on 3 February 2003, 22:17 GMT

Check border color. Not red, right? Thus, not fake news.

With Michael fairly settled in as news editor, it's time to hire another file archiver. The position of file archiver does not really need an introduction. They handle the files in our archives - adding, updating, moving, screenshotting, anything.

Again, the main thing required here is time. At the moment, there are over a thousand files in pending. That certainly is not the normal situation, though. On a regular day, we get in average 12-13 files. On a busy day, we get 50.

Experience with multiple calculators is a big advantage - we try not to put a preference on any calculator model or platform. Owning a lot of calculators is not required, though - just having some general experience. And just like last time - we're looking for a long term commitment, as well as a high availability. You all know what our users think when there are weeks without updates.

If you're interested, contact us at newstaff@ticalc.org. Please include the following information:

  • Full name
  • Email address
  • If you have MSN or AIM or similar as means for us to contact you
  • Age
  • Current level of education (finished or unfinished)
  • Where you live (town/state/country)
  • Approximate amount of time you think you can put into this per week
  • Which calculators you have experience with or access to
  • A quick motivation on why we should pick you

Also, from experience of last time: This is not a paid job.

Due to the huge interest in this, we have shortened the time for applications. We will now accept applications up to and including Feb 9th.

And, I'm screwed... I accidentally sent a rather obscene e-mail to the hiring staff, instead of to the owner of http://maddox.xmission.com/ . Yeah. I apologize for that... my bad...

wow.
that is pretty bad. Thats like mailing your crimes evidence to the police house with a description of what you did instead of some type of furnace housing place that would destroy the evidence.

Interesting... I post a little here and there and my total dls go up by 30 in less than a few minutes

Yes! As of right now there are 1067 files in pending. That is a lot for a new archiver to take on when they are just starting out. But it can be done.

Maybe TICalc.org should set up a sort of distributed file archiving job. I.e., 15 reviewers review at least 160 files every month (or about 8 files every weekday). Each file must be reviewed by three reviewers and not by the author.

I will be willing to look at about 8-10 files a day for 83+ if such an option were made available, but it sounds like you want people to review more than that.

If a reviewer is found to be slacking or otherwise causing more harm than benefit, then other file archivers cna anonymously file a report and when several are filed they would be reviewed and action would be determined.

As a benefit, reviewers would have access to the TICalc.org file qeue so that could be a sort of non-cash incentive.

If there were 15 reviewers reveing 8 files per week day, each file is reviewed by 3 reviewers, then 40 files per day would be processed. While this would take a while to plow through 1000 files, this is in addition to the current staff, which review files and do not need secondary review.

Yes, in a perfect world, but ticalc.org has waited this long to just add one file archiver. I doubt they have the time to hire and teach 15 people to do the archives.

1 or 2 a week? I could go through about 10 a day! You no idea how much free time I have because I do nothing at school.

Sleep is for the weak! I don't sleep 9 hours a day, more like 3 or 4, the rest is well... the commute to school, eating, games, use of facilities and talking with friends.
I did apply as soon as this news article was posted, I'm also working on my site that I just put up in my author profile. It's not completed but I do have all my 86 programs there (the newest versions) and about 50 other programs that I have tested and reviewed from the 86 basic archive. I did that over the weekend

Magnus, I know that there are going to be a lot of people applying for this job (possibly) and might come to the point where you just have to close your eyes and point. ;) Hang in there lol :) You're doing a good job, waiting until after Michael Vincent was settled in was smart.

Now that my nose is a nice brownish color, well.. lets face it, you may not get a chance to hire as many file archivers as is necessary to keep all the files up to date. I guess what I'm trying to say is, if theres anything that we can do (we being the people who want to help out but don't have enough time/various calculator experience [most of us own 83+ and have only used them I am sure] ) then please let us know.. I'd love to apply for archiver, except for School is kicking my butt and all I've really ever used is an 83/83+/SE.. I'm sure there are more people who feel the same way as I do.

Anything we can do to possibly help out around here??? I'd like to see this place running more smoothly or something...

Ahh, the benefits of an older brother who passes on old calculators to you. I have plenty of free time because i own school (despite the fact that i do absolutely nothing and still hear from 5 colleges i applied to and get into all 5). I have about 7 hours of free time for each day, with a 9 period schedule as a senior. Weekends are about 9 hours free total. So thats 44 hours of free time that i could be doing anything in. Then in school I have about 4 hours that I can test and review programs in (yes teachers get a little suspicious when I pull out a different calc every 5 minutes, no they really cant say much because they know I am the elite of my school in sciences and math).
Calcs owned- 82,83+,85,86,92+
Calcs i can steal/use from people I know- 83,83+Silver,89
Calcs I can use proficiently- all that I have access to except the 92+
So I think I could definitely be an archiver, if not then definitely a reviewer.

I have never actually seen a 73, 80 or an 81. Its things like those that make me feel young. But then again when im using my 86 and everyone around me is using a 83+ (which I have but dont use because i prefer the 86) makes me feel old for using and knowing a little too much about all these other calcs

Haha! 5 is too much? My dad went out and bought a 2nd 86 because he thought we didnt own one. So now i have another 86 to test some of my link progs on now.
i had 2 TI-82s, sold one for 50 to a n00b, a TI-83 that was totalled by a friend who wanted to see if I could fix it(an ice cube had more of a chance of coming back to life in an oven than the calc did), and 2 85s (one is modded with LEDs that blink with link activity.

What was the TI-83 like? How totalled was it? How do you add LED's to the link port to make it flash? Those ought to be standard hardware.

the 83 had battery acid dried up all over the main board. The entire lower right hand side of the keys did not work and the lcd cable had a few wires cut so it was missing the first 3 lines of the screen.

Putting the LEDs in isn't that hard. I dont remember exactly how to do it but I have it saved somewhere.
-First off you have to open up the calc and melt in 2 LED sized hole near the link port.
-Next you have to have some LEDs, solder, soldering gun/iron, magnification lenses and a steady habd
-On the link port there are three connections, you have to connect the each LED to one of the connections and connect them into the battery. Again I dont remember which connections they are. I think there is also a specific resistor you have to put in to get a noticable flash of the LEDs.
-Downfalls to the way i have it -YOU MUST REMOVE THE BATTERIES WHEN YOU AREN'T USING IT. The LEDs are constantly on even when the calc is off. There is a way to do it so that the LEDs are off when the calc is off but I never bothered with it

>> There is a way to make the LEDs turn off when the calc is off.

Simply re-wire the LEDs to draw power from the link port instead of from the batteries. That way they should only activate during a linking procedure. What would be even cooler is if you made the LEDs stay on when the calc is on, but instead put them above the screen like a book light. That way, you could play games or program when ambient light is difficult to find.

I knew there was a way to do it I just didnt bother with it after that.
Those lights for the screen sound useful when a teacher turns off the lights to use an overhead projector... hmmmmm, nah too close to the LCD, I don't want to slip up and kill a calculator (they haven't done anything to me)
