Zelda Demo Released for the 89
Posted by Michael on 26 January 2003, 19:25 GMT

Jason Ho has released a demo of his upcoming game, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. Although not finished, the game looks promising, especially the smooth graphics. The author also plans to release the game's engine for others to create more Zelda games.

Is it stable? I don't want it crashing my calc.

It's cool, try it, it's fun... kill stuff, but there's not much else to do than that, thought it's really great, imo.

wait, wrong one.

Also Michael, you have been deleting an awful lot of posts lately. Can't there be some middle ground? Some off topic posts are quite interesting and can get quite engrossing. But when you just delete it blandly, it really makes people angry. So could you please use better judgement?

yes, a middle ground would be nice
The post I made was merely to see how quickly you would delete it, nothing personal, but please, do calm down on post deleting, my other post in this articel is the sort of stuff that should be deleted.

I definitely agree with this statement (see my comments in the previous news item, if they haven't been deleted). I concede the point that _some_ threads are too off-topic, etc. to be kept, but not _all_ of them...

The funny thing is, you've strayed from the topic about Zelda. now you are talking about getting of topic, and this is an off-topic conversation! Go figure!

Is there a 92+ version, and if not, does he plan to make one?

If he made it in TIGCC he only needs to add one line to make it work on the 92+--email him and ask.

Probably. Getting input as fast as he does in this program pretty much requires it.

On the note of speed, how do you do grayscale graphics so fast? Am I just overlooking something in TIGCC? I know this might be 100% ASM, but I also know that some people who write C programs have REALLY FAST graphics. I am yet to figure out how.

I've never done any *fast* graphics before in grayscale. I always use black/white because it's so much easier.

All good calc gamers should know that graphics aren't everything.

But every calc games also knows that when a game has incredibly fast grayscale graphics (like this Zelda does), they have something special on their hands.

Damn 83+ display... I know that there was that greyscale game engine released a while back, but games run very slowly under it.

More than likely i wont make a TI-92+ or V200 version. This is because i dont own either of those, and im not too familiar with them either. (i also dont have the VTI roms for it)

You should really make a 92+ version. ROM for VTI is avalable from education.ti.com under the software updates section--download the software update (1.05), and place it in the VTI directory.

:) .clc files also work in the new vti83 3.0

A much faster way than downloading 2mb from a calculator.

There are plenty of sites that offer a huge amount of ROM images for free... the problem is, I think it might be illegal.

If you use _keytest and the RR_... constants rather than calling _rowread directly, adding TI-92+/V200 support is just a matter of adding 2 #defines (one for the TI-92+ and one for the V200).

Messages containing "first comment" boasts, requests for game ports, or criticisms of "newsworthiness" will generally be deleted.

hm... seems to me that this thread falls under the "request for ports" category

If a post in this thread is a request for ports, it is the one starting the thread. Mine is just a tip for easier porting.

And a request for a TI-89->TI-92+/V200 port is not as unreasonable as a request for a TI-85->TI-83+ or, worse, TI-89->TI-83+ port. The TI-89/92+/V200 calculators are similar enough for such a request to be very reasonable.
