Void Productions returns to ticalc.org
Posted by Magnus on 5 June 2002, 12:42 GMT

Due to the recent problems with the server over at calc.org, Void Productions have moved back to ticalc.org for hosting. You can now reach them at http://void.ticalc.org.

The comments below are written by ticalc.org visitors. Their views are not necessarily those of ticalc.org, and ticalc.org takes no responsibility for their content.

it is nice to see something new but ticalc.org needs to fix their system way to many comments lately and it makes it hard to read cuz there are so many

It is a hobby for them, not a religion. It doesnt have to be perfect, and I see nowhere on the site where the ultimate goal (to provide a collective archive of calculator progs and news) is not achieved. Give um a break, if you care that much, why dont you join the staff and do something about it instead of complaining all the time. Put this at the bottom of your posts and maybe that kid will get it through his head....

Alright, I'm going to step out of the woodwork (during exams, no less) and cry foul on this one. No offense to the guy who wrote the .sig, because you probably had no say in the initial matter (and I doubt I'd care, even if you did), but I have a few points to bring up.

Point the first.

The quality of ticalc.org's boards are, quite simply, a function of two things: the ability for the moderators to keep up deleting off-topic and unconstructive posts, and the ability of ticalc.org's user based to engage in some kind of mature, rational discussion over whatever's being brought up. Infrequent checkings of the boards show a total, flagrant, and unapologetic disregard for the latter point.

That said, I have no idea how much the moderators are working to moderate. I do know this, though: remember when I was news editor here? I do. I remember when I deleted upwards of fifty posts a week: sometimes more than a hundred. Sad but true, but this led to some pretty decent conversations sometimes: ones that I actually took pleasure in participating in. And why?

Because people would relentlessly, callously troll. Because people would write "First Post!" Because people would engage in swearing matches. Because people would write ASCII art. None of this has stopped, but unfortunately it has continued on unchecked.

Because what the TI community was once - a group that fostered its own, a group that put out some really fantastic assembly programs, a group that gave more of a damn about writing and creating than it did about street cred - is now irrevocably and unquestionably dead.

And you have nobody to blame for it but yourselves.

There is no second point, because I have to finish a lab report and I can't come up with anything else clever right now.

- Nick

Amen Nick. By this post there are 273 comments and less than 10 are even remotely related on-topic. No amount of tweaking the comment system is going to fix that. I don't know why I even bother skimming the comments anymore. It's painfully obvious that I have to go somewhere else if I want to read some intelligent conversation. I'm actually glad that Void's messageboard is down right now, because I'd hate for it to be filled up by crap leaked off this board. Sad, but true.

calc.org used to be a really good site but lately it has been dying. its too bad the ticalc people dont update their site much anymore except files and news, the comment system is outdated and it needs a forum. oh well, at least its the best we currently have.

How about not adding that message to end of posts? After all, I highly doubt that the ticalc.org staff moderates these boards (hell, they're really behind on archive updates) and the message just adds a few hundred bytes to the data that has to be downloaded. Besides, unless you have a 28.8K modem, it shouldn't take too long to load the board. And the boards aren't that hard to read either.

"Forums are even harder to read. All those threads ... at least this way each board has only a few hundred posts as opposed to a thousand ..."

I'm assuming you mean /.'s forums are harder to read than ticalc.org's, but I must disagree. There may be upwards of a thousand comments on some of /.'s articles, but you can choose only to view the very best, the good, the average, or all of the comments. This can cut down 1000 posts to roughly 100 (i.e., if you choose to view only the very best comments).

Also, ticalc.org gets nowhere near the traffic of /.--ticalc.org serves 195 thousand requests per day (see About, Web Server Statistics), and /. serves upwards of 1 million requests daily (FAQ, About /.).

I didn't mention Slashdot (yes, unlike SOME lazy people out there, I actually spell out names/words) did I? And, unless you failed geometry or haven't taken it yet, you should have learned by now that you shouldn't assume anything except for relative position. Now with that off my mind ...
Why are you guys so obsessed with Slashdot? What is it, the benchmark to measure all other web sites by? And I wasn't referring to Slashdot's forums ... I was referring to forums in general.
