TIGCC v0.93 for Linux Released
Posted by Eric on 12 March 2002, 21:18 GMT

After a 7-month hiatus, Romain Liévin has released TIGCC/Linux v0.93 (both the binaries and sources. The Windows version has been at v0.93 for quite some time, so it's nice to see that he's now sharin' the love.

It kind of makes you wonder just how many people really do use Linux out there, I mean, they're still comming out with programs for it. I guess it happens so rarely that that's why is gets to be on the news list...

I don't know... Linux us good, but not widely used

Heh.. not widely used?
no, only 1/3 of all webserververs in the world run linux. :)

As desktop OS it isn't as used though, but I wouldn't be suprised if it is up to 10% there too.
Many can't make up their mind and runs both a Microsoft OS and Linux on the same computer.

Personally I run linux as server and W2K as desktop.
Good thing with linux is that even a cheap computer like and old p2-300 with say.. 128M ram (you get that dirt cheap today) make an exellent server with Linux for home or small business use.

I have seen a triple-boot system. It ran Win2000 for stable windows stuff, WinME for compatability, and some version of Linux for networking. Of course a Mac can be a quintuple-boot system (OS9, OSX, WinME, Win2000, and Linux) without having 2 versions of any OS on it. OS9 is pure MacOS, so it is not too similar to the Unix-based OSX, and Win2000 emulates DOS, so it is not much like Win98.

I'm running WinXP Pro for most progs, Win98SE for the rare program that needs the compatability and Mandrake Linux 8.1 for fun.

It's working swell and I can say that it's fun having a triple-boot comp.

35% of desktop computers are running linux. With wine you can run several great titles in games. Lots of games are nativly run. As in they support linux. Linux is used by the FBI because of how secure and usable it is. I have had windows crash with a BSOD and linux has never frozen up or stoped responding. If a program stops responding just use the KILLALL command. my linux system has been up for 6 years and 35 days. I use a 6 day emergancy power supply. I built it myself. but you can buy a hour supply at curcit city. Linux is the most stabel os i now of. Except for the one i made myself.

I'd like to mention that the US FBI uses Linux on their web servers. It's probably because Linux is extremely cheap. I found this out at some web site that shows what OS and server (e.g., Apache) different domains are using. It also shows the uptimes of different machines. I think the server with the longest uptime is in Japan (go figure) with an uptime of about 1338 days. I found this at www.netcraft.com.

Linux is free (as a download), but you should buy it from a company like Red Hat so you can get support for it (only about $75). I saw somewhere on slashdot (http://slashdot.org/) that someone started tallying the price of equivalent Windows software that came with his Linux pack and stopped after about $5000 (not counting software he didn't use). In short, Linux rocks. Go to the link if you want more information (and spend your $5000 on something else).

Yeah, but comparitively speaking...

Linux may be used often for networking, but the average calc user probably doesn't use it as a mian operating system.

I can just imagine those boys down at the FBI downling Linux programs so they can play games on their calc instead of making the world safe from democracy.

Linux is mostly used by programmers. TIGCC is a tool for programmers. I imagine there are quite a few calculator developers that use Linux. Thus, I conclude this release to be useful and relevant.

Your initial post was a bit funny, since you said "...still coming out with programs for it." That almost makes it sound like Linux is some obsolete operating system (like, say, MS-DOS), and you find it amazing that people still write programs for it.

While Linux has been around for quite awhile (and used on servers), "Linux on the Desktop" is relatively new. It is not something that started and failed. Rather, it is just becoming slowly more popular by the day. So yes, programs are "still coming out", as you put it.

For the record, I use Linux/KDE on all of my computers (2 at home, 1 at work, one laptop). It may not be ready for the masses, but it is certainly ready for me.

I know I have said this before in other posts, but: you may want to search the ticalc.org community section and see who uses Linux. You might surprise yourself!

Hope that clarifies things.

Sure, why not? It says "Don't post comments designed to disrupt page display, such as excessively long comments or gibberish." Maybe they weren't *designed* to disrupt page display, but to entertain us?

Seeing how off-topic everything is anyway, how is this any worse?

ok obviously you are trying really hard to defend depleat and ding's posts because you do not really thing that posting war and peace and half of the news article maybe thousands of times is not designed to disrupt page display, nor would that be entertaining except to people like ding and depleat. a quick search of the internet would turn up war and peace, which is obviously what ding did.

BTW I noticed someone not only took off the really long comments but also the ones referring to them; nice job guys.

also thanx to the commenters informing me on what linux was although I'm still unsure on one thing:
What can linux be run on (as in pc, mac, apple 2E, ti-92+...)

Linux can run on 386's, Alpha, Sparc, M68k, and PPC (Mac), and has recently been ported to the Itanium and IBM mainframes. It probably wouldn't do very well on a TI-92+ as I would like, because it has very little memory and doesn't have an MMU (used for virtual and protected memory).

Therefore it hasn't been "ported" to anything. You just install it on a Linux-formatted partition of ANY computer. Right now, I have Windows XP and Red Hat Linux 7.2 on my computer at the same time. I pick my OS when I boot my computer (XP is default).

I like the legal controversies they could get into with this statement: "The comments below are written by ticalc.org visitors. Their views are not necessarily those of ticalc.org, and ticalc.org takes no responsibility for their content."

As long as ticalc.org removes comments and/or limits how comments can be posted, they are responsible for all of the comments that remain. Slashdot (link) gets around this with karma--they don't actually remove comments, they just let users choose the quality of comments that they want to read.

Also, since I don't see the news item for some reason, happy pi day!

Mole day is a thing that has to do with chemistry. It celebrates Avogadro's number, 6.022 x 10^23 (a mole is a quantity of something that equals Avogadro's number, like how a dozen eggs is 12 eggs, a mole of eggs would be 6.022 x 10^23)

maybe you overlooked this, but there is a good reason how ticalc can post a disclaimer and censor the occasional message at the same time: Time.
ticalc wants this to be a real time forum so they do not screen every message as it is submitted, as some on-line forums do. so, if some new person comes to the site and sees a bunch of garbage that was recently posted, ticalc can dispute it is not their fault. But, they do not want to lose all of their members and viewers so they censor any messages that should not in any circumstance be there. As the reply page says, "Other users want to read replies relevant to a particular article, and general discussion should be kept to other areas, such as our Mailing Lists. Using our site is a privilege, and we reserve the right to make judgments about what is appropriate for our visitors. "

I believe that legally, once they start censoring messages of any kind, they become responsible for all of them. If they are asked to remove a message by someone, they will--therefore the user who posted the comment does not own it--ticalc.org does. Another site I frequent was able to dodge a bullet by not removing user comments--slashdot.org (see link).

The domain is registered through a person there, yes. But that's not where the server is operated from. A correct lookup would be "whois 195.67.128.26@whois.ripe.net", which will show you:
