Christmas Status Update
Posted by Magnus on 22 December 2001, 19:17 GMT
Well, it's Christmas time, so I figured it's time for a status update about the file archives. We've been working on a pending queue of over 1,000 files uploaded just before and during our archive shutdown. That number is currently down to 438 - but it's climbing back up with an average of almost 100 files per week right now. Right now, our priorities are to get the majority of these files into the archives. Because of this, we are almost only adding files that are either new with a distinct name or clear updates to existing programs. Files that are not updates but have names that conflict with existing programs are put on hold, to be processed once the rest is done. Any files that require a more extensive check before they are allowed into the archives (for possibility of violating the content rules) are also placed on hold for the time being. That said, we'd also like to wish all our visitors Happy Holidays.

On the subject of this - ive just been looking over the new files - there is a boatload of 'em. The problem is how to sort the dud's from the dimonds, so to speak. I think there should be some sort of a rating system in effect for files - see download.com for what I mean. This would help sort out the junk "asks-your-name-and-prints-it-out" type of program from the "quake-on-a-calc" type. It shouldn't be that hard to implement really. As it is I normally only look at assembly games/progs, since I know that they required at least a min amount of time and effort to create.

And dice rollers made in BASIC, those must all be destroyed too. although some assembly ones are ok. I use one on my 89 that actually works well, it rolls 6 or 7 different kind of dice, and it all works by just hitting the corresponding button, once per roll, very intuitive, and only one single screen, no complicated menu system for dividing totals or selecting the number of facets on the die. This program is a little rigid as far as types of dice, but it's good. Too bad I foget which one it is....but I have digressed to far, oh yeah, that's right, I was talking about destroying all dice rollers written in basic.
So, go forth and destroy, or rate low once they let you rate.

You're doing great, keep it up! However, there is just one little thing that annoys me... You should start to make order in the present chaos of 83p and 8xp files scattered around the 83 and 83+ sections, because not all of them are at the right place.

That's a good idea. Just get the most important files out first. Good luck keeping up with all the files!

Neat, a program that I uploaded right before this whole offensive files mess just showed up. Thanks ticalc.org. It's actually a helpful program unlike many that can be found in the archives. Happy Holidays!

Great job getting the files back in such short time. Keep up the goodwork!
P.S. If you think the 83plus should have an ebook, click the link above.

Ever notice that in news articles, there's always a super-thread about something dumb, and then there are 2-3 mini-threads, and the rest are single posts that get no replies, it really looks a little weird if you have your news set to display all posts on one page.
