I agree. It seems kind of silly to be buying software for a calculator, for some reason.

Maybe this will turn into a repeat of Microsoft and Altair BASIC... someone will figure out how to copy the program, TI will get angry, and everyone will start charging for TI89 software. Blah. I need sleep.

You see ladies and Gentlemen, that the point is pretty clear. Technologies...in a lack of better words is good. ticalc.org was one of the best sites most people go to for calculators but time changes so does technologies. I'll jump to the conclusion here, I believe that ticalc.org should have programs for the PDA, Casio calc, TI calc and other small devices. This could really bring ticalc.org back. We have to stick with technologies technologies is the gateway to the future, if you can't follow it you'll lose in today's world. Its just like the story with the hare and the tortoise, and ticalc.org is the hare. God speed

TICalc.org is for TI calculators only. That's what the name implies, anyway :)

There could of course be software in the archives for interfacing with PDAs and such. No Casio calculators, thank you -- those things are crap.

LOL. From my personal experience with a Casio Graph 100 (which I won as a prize in a Mathematics contest), I can confirm this. It now serves me mostly as a case to hide an emergency supply of spare batteries for my TI-89. :-D

I just have a couple questions in regard to these statements:

1. Where did ticalc.org go?
2. TIcalc.org is a ti-calculator website (hence the name, ticalc.org). Why should they cover casio, pda, etc.? It's like asking a Gamecube website to cover Xbox stuff. It's just not what they do.

Well first off all, we shouldn't compare it from xbox to gamecube but we should compare it to ticalc.org to cnet.com, this will boost more people to this site and may be some profit some how (ad, spons, etc) also it will be the #1 website for archives for small device applications. The name could change and redirect to another site for example my site: compacttech.com or some other sites like mobiletech.com,calcpdatech.com etc.

I, for one, won't buy a flash app. For god's sake, we pay around 150 (after getting my computer linking stuff) and now they want me to spend another 15 for some software that someone here in the ti community could remake...? I, personally, would rather make my own spreadsheet and have it be customized to my own uses rather than spend money to buy it.

time it would take to write a spread sheet is many hundreds of hours. In that time you could earn many hundreds of dollars. And then you could spend a little bit of that money and buy the spread sheet program.

It is better to buy software than to have to write it.

I agree, writing a speadsheet application is not a trivial task. And a generic spreadsheet application can be adapted to many situations without having to customise the code. OTOH, I'm doubtful about whether it's worth $15. If it was a complete office suite and had more features, I'd be more convinced.

contrariwise, why use a spreadsheet on a calculator in the first place? the ones for computers are far more superior and easier to use than anything on a calculator. I know you guys are probably thinking about doing things just to show that it cn be done, but in this case, i say leave spreadsheets to the computers.

You're replying to the guy who wrote a completely awesome, free spreadsheet for the 86. Btw, David, that thing rocks. Excellent work. It's a shame more people don't find that sort of thing useful.

There is a project for a free spreadsheet already on its way for some time (but not released yet) at http://calc.psigoo.com (it is called TISS). (Thanks to Ti-Fr for this information.)

Yes, TISS is free and there will be a beta available relatively soon (1-2 weeks). ALL functions, variables, and asm programs available through the homescreen are available in TISS. Copy and pasting to and from the homescreen will be possible. Currently the grid size is 26x99, however extending this will be simple. All that needs to be completed before the first beta are functional menus, dialogs for options, and selection of cells. After this first beta, anyone that knows VC++ or VB could help me with a program for converting to and from xls format (I have xls format documentation). Though the picture on my webpage is simulated, it is almost identical to what it looks like now; with the exceptions that the window menu has been removed and the status bar has been used to display the data in the selected cell to many more decimal places.

Yes, it's for the most part my work alone. I have received help with sprites, advice (Flavien Racine), and Jon Eriksson from JEsystems has helped with TISS.

Why does everyone complain about $15 for an app? Think about how long it takes to write something like that. The development costs are easily in the thousands of dollars, possibly tens of thousands. Look at the price of comparitive Palm Pilot applications. They are at least $15-$30 or more. I don't know if the calculator application can compare, but if it can, then it is definitely worthwhile.

Why would I buy a Spreadsheet program for the TI-89 when I can buy the entire Microsoft Office 95 program suite, including Excel, for less than $10? Are people really going to be typing on that ABCDE keyboard??

Office *95*, notice. That's easily $10, on an academic discount. Windows XP Professional upgrade is only $99.

Oh, okay, I get it now. Actually I was about to think of that. :-)

I go to Purdue and they have an agreement with Microsoft. Every software title is $5, not tax here. So I bought office XP professional and win XP professional upgrade for only $10.
