Simultaneous Equation Solver FLASH App
Posted by Eric on 19 November 2001, 21:59 GMT

TI has released a new FLASH application: Simultaneous Equation Solver for the TI-89 and TI-92+ (click link to login, click again to view page). Basically, it's a little application for you lazy types who don't want to use solve() or rref() for some odd reason. It's free, so go check it out. Thanks to the hordes who emailed me with the news.

Well, I guess this is good. At least TI hasn't forgotten the 89.

Not really... No... It's more like: "The guy after 1st," but with a little imagination...

why not say:
Same five minutes as the first post!

Maybe the first comment wasn't up when he submitted his comments (notice they are very close together).

that's why you say "same 5 minutes as first post"...

Well, did he (she?) know that some guy was gonna post a post within five minutes of his?

Gee, 2nd.

Well, this app is kind of useless since the 89 already does these functions. Maybe for those who don't want to type in all the required syntaxes or for number crunching.

No-- this one would be the third. Keep trying.

If anyone could figure out how to do it on the 92+ that would be great, cause I dont want to waste memory for a program that the calculator will already do.

Here's how.

Lets say we have the equations x+y=10 and 2x-y=11.

1. Go to the algebra menu on the home screen and select "solve(". If the equations possibley have complex or imaginary solutions in it, then use "cSolve(."
2. Type in "x+y=10 and 2x-y=11,{x,y})
3. On the command line, it should look like "solve(x+y=10 and 2x-y=11,{x,y})
4. Press enter.
5. x=7 y=3
6. There's a faster a way of doing it so u don't have to type everything. The custom menu fills in the {} and the word "and."
7. For 3 or more equations, you have to put in three equations with "and" in between each and it should be {x,y,z}. Also, your calculator is not limited to x,y variables. Those are the variables in the example equation. So you can use a and b but you have to type in {a,b} not {x,y}.

You can also find zeros/roots/x-intercepts using the zero( command. I reccomend you read the manual that came with your calculator. It really helps.

So the quote at the beginning is necessary . . . that may be what screwed me up . . . or you just forgot the last quote. . .

OK, I'm not sure whether you're being honest or a smartass. No, you don't need the quotes. He put them there to differentiate between what you actually type and the rest of what he was saying. Geez.

if you were to read what he was criticizing.. you would see that there is a quote at the beggining of each thing to type, but not after, so to a perfectionist like himself, he gets confused.
btw. i got my CBL and TI Interactive today from the programming contest.. the hardest part of getting them to work was trying to get that freeking white package open (anyone else have trouble with that white package?)

package opening is hell.

I find the hardest part about operating *any* of TI's products is getting the packaging opened. *shrug*

I once got a Leatherman tool that was impossible to open... unless you already had that tool to cut the plastic...
Ugh... snake logic... my head hurts

yep.. i agree.. but the CBL doesn't come in one of those plastic thingies.. i was refering to the fedex packaging that the actual shipment with everything in it was in. it felt like paper, but it's impossible to rip it.. and the tape was too close to the paper to get an edge to rip the tape off, so i just busted out my leatherman and jacked the crap out of that thing.

Yeah, I got mine and had to use my Leatherman too. I think the psuedo paper is called tyvek or something like that. Oh yeah, my temperature probe doesn't work at all, so TI is sending me another one. I can't think of anything else to say, so I'll shut up now.

I find the fastest way is to think about it: add the equations together to get 3x=21, thus x=7, and figure out from there that y=3. Much easier than plugging it into a calculator, and keeps your brain from atrophying too.

Elimination sucks when you have like 7 equations to answer, but for 2 equations, it's just alright.
