Plethora of Programs
Posted by Nick B. on 17 July 2001, 09:36 GMT
While we all wait for a permanent copy of the archives to arrive on CD, there's been a few new releases. (And, yes, I know "plethora" has been used in a news article title before, but hey, it's my first article, so bear with me here.) - Destination Software has released a demo of Zenith Saga for the 89 (HW1, HW2) and 92+ (HW1, HW2). This huge RPG has been in development for nearly three years. According to the authors, "this is only a small portion of chapter one, chapter two will be released later because there's only so much memory on these things."
- Badja has released Crates 3D for both the 83 and 83+ in ION. The game is a 3D puzzle game in which you travel through a world of crates searching for the exit, with the ability to view the action from four different angles. Also, there is an 86 port in the works.
- What would a programs update be without something from Patrick Davidson? An updated version of Phoenix for the 89 and 92+, Phoenix: Platinum Edition, adds grayscale, backgrounds, new and more advanced enemy patterns, and, of course, bug fixes. The game is currently version 0.50, so there is still more to come.
- Word on the street has it that Anarchy for the 83 and 83+ ION is pretty good. Made by Konstantin Beliakov and Paul Robson of the TCPA, Anarchy features 64 chaotic sectors to warp to and from, blowing things up, collecting money, upgrading your ship, etc., all in what has been described to me as a "3D-ish" world.
Alright, I'm off on vacation now. Enjoy the games.

Nice article! Very professional and structured for a first article.
Meanwhile, this could be a first comment.

hmmm it seems my program I submitted about a month ago still has not been updated even though Patrick Davidson's programs are updated on an hourly basis...

I realize that it may be upsetting to see that some programs appear to receive preferential treatment, while others are shoved to the back of the list, but in all fairness, ticalc.org receives hundreds of submissions weekly, and they have 3 archivers. I'd like to see any of you do as well after (3 years now??).
Anyway, although I still have pending programs for more than 2 weeks, and they only uploaded the TI-89 versions of the programs they got to Tuesday, even though they negelected the source code and the TI-92+ version, I still feel ticalc.org does a consistently good job of maintaining the best TI-basec calculator site ever.
If you are unhappy with the submissions process, then perhaps you shouldn't waste your time.
As a final note: ticalc gets lots of programs. 98% of them are crap. The kind they have to mess with because they get submitted. 2% of them are really excellent works by great programmers. As soon as those people make new ones, they get news articles and immediate updates. And why is that? Two reasons: 1) because those programs are better than normal programs, and they deserve preferential treatment (hey, I've never made one of those either, but I'd rather see a great game like Phoenix than another Nibbles clone, and yes I realize the irony in that statement considering my program list). 2) The reason ticalc.org is on top is because they have the best stuff all in one place and they do a consistent job of upkeep, unlike some other sites. For all you might say about the old ti-files, I always thought it was crap compared to ticalc.org. And where the hell are they now? They got lazy and bored. Last time I checked, Magnus was still here as EIC. That's commitment.
So, for all those who would trash ticalc.org, give me a break. You don't have the right. They've given you countless hours of their time to create this place, and it's all FREE. I cannot imagine what their bandwidth costs. I couldn't afford it.
I know it's upsetting to have a program you submitted take weeks or months (sometimes), but where else can you find the environment we have here? Well, having said that it's all free, I'll add this. This is the price you pay when you don't pay a price. Sad, but true. And as long as you aren't paying ticalc.org, then you'll need to join the elite ranks of the masters if you want to see your programs get updated every 10 minutes. I guarantee the person who writes a fully-fledged Zelda clone for the 89/92+ will receive such treatment...
Anyway, enough rambling for now.
It's not perfect, but I say "Long live ticalc.org!" :-)
Did I forget my <ramble></ramble> tags?...
