New TI-83 Plus SDK Released
Posted by Henrik on 20 June 2001, 21:13 GMT

Captain's log, stardate 2001062.0. My crew has abandoned me and forced me to do the news bulletins myself. Well, not really, everyone else is busy, so I am filling in for the news staff.

Andy Hochhaus writes in and reports that the new free version of the TI-83 Plus SDK contains a freeware private key to digitally sign Flash Applications for use on any TI-83 Plus or TI-83 Plus SE. Andy also mentions that they have added a method of creating systems menus.

Computer, initiate download.

Update (Henrik): Dan Englender gave a pointer to a press release.

Wow, this would be cool!

Minor thing is that the signing I won in the DS contest might just hav turned worthless.

But eh, who cares!

So? I now have 6 signings turned worthless. I'm in 6 times the pain...And after all that money I spent. At least it's good that it's free.

Yeah, I guess it really hurts if you paid for the signings you have.

Not really. You can still get them signed, but it allows other people to create freeware as well. There was no way of anticipating this. I applaud TI for this move, it turns out they aren't such an evil conglomerate after all!! It also shows that they in fact do read what programmers and other TI users say about their products. Way to go, TI!

They're just trying to force all the people writing pure assembly to use flash. I honestly don't know whether this is good or bad, but I doubt they'd sign games as quickly as oh, say, more annoying math programs.

Ti won't sign any freeware apps anymore,
you sign 'em YOURSELF! :-)

Well it means that we can look forward to many new flash apps in the future. I know that even if I had the ability to make them before, I wasn’t about to go spend money on having them signed. I mean it just wasn’t worth it. Now that they’re free...

Actually, there was a way of anticipating this. If you read the FAQs on the TI app development contest, you would know that one of them hinted to this in a very obvious way.

That could be true, but the DS slide case you won is still just as rare and desirable ;)

Anyhow, here's a couple of other things that the news item didn't mention:
1) The Debugger/Simulator has been updated:
--Emulates the TI-73 and TI-83 Plus SE now as well.
--Runs the latest OSes (1.50 and 1.13)
--Adds an always-on-top option for the calculator window, and a new "Display" window (which shows only the calculator's screen).
--It will now load .8xk files in addition to .hex and .app.
2) Some of the util files have been updated (appsign and fillapp particularly), and there's a new util file that adds a GraphLink header and creates a .8xk file.
3) TI's released some new tools in addition to the menu creator (which I couldn't properly get to work, but whatever). One's to convert bitmaps to picture files or plain data, and the other's to convert a .hex ZDS output into a .8xp file (so you can use ZDS to create regular programs).
4) Last and least, there's a press release regarding this stuff. Click the URL above to read it.

Yeah, me too. I've been developing an app that i want to be free, but its been slightly hindered by the pricetag of the initial signing ($99 for the eductional SDK). but now freeware signings are free, so woohoo :-)

I agree!... and I think many 83+ programmers agree too. This is one of the best things that TI could have done right now... I feel sorry for the guys who actually bought some signings... Those of you who got it in the DS contest... well you didn't realy pay them and you got them doing one of the things you enjoy most!!

I can't download it...
it says someone already took my calculator id :(
How could that happen??
I don't see any reason to take it since they shouldn't be able to use it

my id is 04070-4B142-B1F9, if you're curious

You should contact TI at ti-cares@ti.com or 1-800-TI-CARES. They should be able to clear that up for you.

Even worser for me! It says my calculator ID is invalid even though I've typed it in about 10 times, it still didn't accept it. What's up with that?

Actually, between the info on his page and the info hotmail requires, it wouldn't be all that hard to report him to the FBI if anyone is so inclined....

Why does some TI-89 person have to do this on seemingly every ti83(+)(+SE) news item? *sigh*

<snide remark>I am assuming you know you make a complete doofus of yourself. Are you 12, or are you just a loser? I could insert something in here about "evil dead 89",..but I wont</snide remark>

oh, and this SDK is great, but ti's "user friendly interface" sure makes you wade through tons of pages to finally get to the actual, *free* download. not to mention what you have to go through to buy something..i counted 11 pages. anyone else?

HEY!!! You better not be making fun of the Evil Dead! I love the Evil Dead! They are the greatest movies ever...SO DON'T DISS THEM! I happen to have a TI 83+ (and am very happy with it) and also think that that person is an idiot to post something about TI 89's on an article about TI 83's...and just so you know, based upon the way you started your message, I can't help but think that you yourself must not be older than 12.

No, we're not making fun of Evil Dead, they were great movies, and have spawned some good games. What we are making fun of is a certain unnamed (depleateduranium) numbskull who continually posts off subject and mentions that he would like Evil Dead for the 89. I find it hard to believe that he is above 8th grade himself, and aside from that, I believe his speaking priveleges should be revoked

Yeah, I got that much, but is it actually out for the 89? I don't think it is, I'm just checking. (What is with the obsession with Evil Dead 89 anyway?!?!?!?! Come on, depleateduranium, you have a calm down about it SOMETIME.)

While I do agree that the 89 has hardware (and generally software) superiority over the 82/83 series, saying it so overtly merely makes you look like an idiot, a |337 h4x0r (NOT a compliment), or a lamer. And you do realize the FBI frowns on piracy of such expensive software, right? If you mean to troll this site, I recommend you find a more troll-friendly <cough>/.</cough> site to troll, and post *slightly* *more* *constructive* comments to this site.

So if anything releated to the 83+ is so bad, then why do you have one? If you hate them so much, just sell the calc.

I just have to say that you are very immature and stupid. Downloading pirated software and telling everyone does not show people that you are cool; it shows people that you are a dips--t.

Anyway, I am happy with the SDK... i have had no problems with it, and this is the best thing that TI has done for a while.
