Java on TI-89/92+?
Posted by Eric on 6 June 2001, 21:27 GMT

Well, we've got BASIC, assembly, and C so far, so why not Java? Stephan Effelsberg has undertaken the challenge to port the Waba Virtual Machine to TI calculators. He's released a very preliminary beta for the TI-89 and TI-92+. Development is still in progress, but it's already able to run nifty programs like Scribble. Check out Stephan's WabaVM page and let him know if you can help with the programming. Good luck!

Okay...what is the point, and when will the killer app be out? May as well not even associate this language with Sun's Java, because it uses entirely different classes...and any java program would require heavy porting to run on waba, and further porting to run on a TI calculator. Why the Fk even bother?

Because the Waba VM is on a lot of other platforms. A lot more then assembly, obviously. (or TI Basic for that matter, at least as far as I know).

The title of the this story is misleading; it isn't really Java, nor claim to be. Waba programs can run on Java Virtual Machines, but Java can't run a Waba VM. It is meant for PDAs and such, so it is very apporiate for it to be ported to TI calcs.

From the website:
Because of the way Waba was designed, developers can use Java development tools to develop Waba programs. However, Waba is not a derivative of Java and has no connection to Sun Microsystems, the owner of the Java brand and related trademarks.

Does this mean that my Pilot just might be able to share programs with my 89???? Or I'm just dreaming again??

Cool!

Now I can have cross platform programs that run on PalmOS, PocketPC (WindowsCE), Win32, Linux, the Agenda VR3(running Linux), and the TI92+!!! That'll minimize the amount of programming effort... But first I have to port Waba to my VR3 (http://www.agendacomputing.com/)

Now if only TI would release an 89 with a touch-screen...

I still wish that TI would use some of the tech from the 89 to make a new Avigo.

Could some person write something that is like AppleScript (Us Mac people know about it). Theoreticaly there are equivalents to applescript in Ti-Basic.
