New Staff Member: Alex Tran
Posted by Eric on 17 January 2001, 17:45 GMT
We're happy to announce the hiring of a new staff member here at ticalc.org, Alex Tran. Alex has taken over the support mail duties, a job I held previously. He's been doing a fine job so far, so we're happy to have him on the team. You can read about the rest of the staff here.

Congratz Alex. Nice to see a new face on the ticalc team.
Off the subject but doorsos helps prevent crashes by pushing sto-> and on but...how do you prevent crashes with the errors with the "black bar line" at the top? I always have to reset my calc...whenever it freezes like this.

Ticalc.org: I noticed that you removed many offtopic posts. I think that you should put into place a mod system like that of slashdot so that all the messages will still be there, but people can ignore offtopic ones if they want. Otherwise, what you are doing is considered censorship.

I removed them. Of course it's censorship. I didn't feel (as a news editor) that the messages belonged, and two of the messages I removed were blatant spam. (I don't remember removing more, but I know the first one had several child posts.)
I didn't censor them because I was opposed to or offended by some statement they made. Our rules simply state that replies should be relevant to the news article in question.
Custom also provides that useful, interesting, or otherwise informational replies usually stay (such as yours, which is off-topic).
Those are the rules--you have the right to feel any way you want toward them. If, however, anyone has constructive critism, they should by all means email news@ticalc.org with it!
I'll disclaim myself by saying your reply was more of a statement than criticism, but it was constructive. However, the "Slashdot" system was considered, but deemed to be way too time-consuming. We usually let neat off-topic replies stay anyhow.

Well, all our code is proprietary, so it may not be that simple to assimilate others' code into ours. (I don't know--I'm a DOS QuickBASIC programmer and am happy to stay away from whatever we use here, hehe.)
As a news editor, I try to be unbiased and objective in removing comments. Because we don't have a general, all-purpose comment board, I often let things remain because they are contemporary and informational. I don't just go down and say "off-topic...off-topic..." and delete things--that's not the only qualifying factor.
Usually, it's the completely unintelligible posts, most vicious flames (especially with foul language), and requests for files or ports that get removed. Most other things have a very good chance of staying. Oh, and I remove double-posts when I see them, too. ;)
Hmm, all email sent to ticalc.org is read--I get a copy of everything sent to news@ticalc.org or faq@ticalc.org, for instance, but we usually don't have time to respond to things sent to news@ticalc.org--we get a lot of mail.
I encourage you to set up a news site! We do recognize the need for general-purpose message boards, but that's really what mailing-lists are for, and we just don't have the resources to police a general-purpose message board. Let me know whether that site ever materializes--I'll check it out.

I realize how you are trying to be objective and unbiased, I just have the opinion that it isn't always completely uniform (as it can't always be with a few humans moderating the board), and the big problem is probably the lack of a moderation system. About the new TI site, though, I'll let you know whether it does ever materialize. I registered two domains for it last night, and I'll make public what they are once they show up in the whois database. I also have a bit of preliminary information that I posted in the URL box for this (lol, now that's one board that's entirely inflexible; I'm hoping to install a new board soon), and I'll hopefullly have a preliminary page up at the new site explaining its mission statement and containing a volunteer staff application in the near future (hopefully next weekend, as I have midterms next week, but I'll let you know if you want). Meanwhile, one of my friends, whose server it will be on, is busy installing slashcode on his site. After that, it will likely be up pretty soon, after I configure it as a TI site and set up things and add staff.
