lpg.ticalc.org Established at ticalc.org
Posted by Eric on 24 September 2000, 18:34 GMT

The Linux Programmer Group has become ticalc.org's newest hosted site. Their main objective, obviously, is to integrate TI calculator programming with the Linux operating system. Their many projects include the popular GtkTiLink, a linking program for both Linux and Windows, and AsmStudio, a TI-86 assembler for Linux.

All I can say is: YES! This RULES! Finally a group for this! Now I won't have to use wine.

P.S. Can I join? Just kidding. :) I don't know the first thing about programming for linux. How different is it to programming for windows?

Is this news? What I'm wondering is what ever happened to gtktilink.ticalc.org. I linked to it on my site for a while and then went to visit it and it was gone. I checked the hosted site list and it had dissapeared! It sounds to me like this is the same group of people with a hosted website by ticalc.org but they changed the URL. And does anyone know why scs.ticalc.org moved to scs.calc.org? Also, to all the communists out there, please don't delete this comment. It does relate to this news and if you delete it, it would simply be censorship without any basis.

Well yeah, I realize that it is now part of it; all I was wondering was whether or not there was a separate reason that it disappeared earlier, or if that was just because it was changing url's. Also, why did SCS move to calc.org?

Yeah, and it's also kind of rambling and isn't too terribly related to this news article, in my opinion. (And yes, my opinion counts--I'm a news editor).

Although I don't usually remove news comments for being off-topic, I usually remove ones that beg and plead not to be removed. Usually those ones end up being inappropriate, and the user know it.

This was probably a good question to ask <hosting@ticalc.org>

I don't think it is rambling; it related directly to the topic, as this site essentially contains another site within it that I thought had disappeared. And ooh, your opinion must be true because you're Mr. Big Shot news editor (TM). That comment is one you could have done without, and I honestly found it to be a bit insulting. I really could care less that you're a news editor, as being able to delete posts doesn't make your opinion count any more than others' opinions; I think that your comment implies arrogance and immaturity, however. If I was like you, I'd probably just go to dmoz.org and remove ticalc.org from the ODP or Uncool it after seeing your comment (although I won't be because I'm not you and a single staff member's arrogant comment wouldn't be a basis for deleting one of the best TI sites out there from it). And I'm not claiming that my opinion matters any more because I'm the editor of the TI Graphing Calculator section in the ODP.

>>Although I don't usually remove news comments for being off-topic, I usually remove ones that beg and plead not to be removed. Usually those ones end up being inappropriate, and the user know it.

Well I've had comments of mine removed that I thought were perfectly on topic. It's kind of ironic, actually, because there was a news item earlier about TI threatening to sue tinews.net, and all the talk of the day was censorship; TI did not in fact sue it, however, and in this case ticalc.org is censoring comments on a day-to-day basis.

Well, like I said; it doesn't matter whether you think something is relevant or not. It's my job to interpret the posting guidelines. That's one of my functions here at ticalc.org. I try to apply those guidelines to each post, and Eric and I have final say in the matter.

That said, I didn't direct the aside about being a news editor to you, I just didn't want five other people to jump in and ask why I thought my opinion counted. I'm sorry you took offense at it, because that was not my intention.

In the end, my opinion DOES count because I AM a news editor--that's WHY it counts, and I take the responsibility very seriously. If I wasn't a news editor, my opinion wouldn't matter. Likewise, your opinion for the ODP matters because you are in charge of the TI graphing calculator section. That's just the way things work.

I think the questions in your original post would have been much better directed to the individual sites in question.

roms, GtkTiLink's developper: the GtkTiLink web site is now a part of the Linux Programmer Group.
Indeed, I decided to create a group which gather some projects for promoting TIcalcs & Linux.
He seems to me that there are not enough TI applications & utilities for Linux in comparison with Windows: linking program, asm & text editors, general tools and so on. So I hope to encourage people to develop for Linux. If you know programming (C, C++, GTK, Qt) and love Linux, mail me...

I use more and more Linux and I find it fantastic. It is very stable, nice and powerful. I crashed it 2 times in 3 years (Quake2 most of the time !).
This is a system which is not very complex but as the most of OS, it requires a learning phase. People believe that clicking with her mouse is enough. I think that not.
There are not a best system, to each OS corresponds a need and a feeling.

Is it just me, or is there really nothing useful to be downloaded from their page? All of the project pages are in a different format, I only saw one that had a non-working snapshot for download, and the download section on their main page consists of a broken link. Is there a planned format for distribution? Is it going to be only source based, or use RPM's or, hopefully, DEB's?
