Cracks and Patches and Fixes, Oh My!
Posted by Nick on 17 August 2000, 18:06 GMT

Julien Muchembled has released some good ole' back-to-school patches for all you fun-loving folks out there. And, now, in the fourth unsorted list in as many news items, here's what you've been missing for the past three hours!:

  • TIB Receiver for the 89 and the 92 Plus. This happy little number allows the user to load a ROM that TI hasn't signed onto your calculator. As a result, files like Wormhole's OpenOS can now be actually loaded onto your calculator. This offers a world of help in the next application we have for you to gape at:
  • Maxmem v2.10, aka "Your Sole God," for the 89 and the 92 Plus. Maxmem's added support for AMS v2.05 also comes with a bit of a snafu: there's now a computer-based patch utility for the user, because of the relative instability in patching a ROM on-calc. As a result, you now patch your ROM before sending the patched product to the calculator with - guess what - TIB Receiver! It all comes full circle, see? Diabolical!
  • HW2Patch v2.20, aka "Also Your Sole God," for the 89 and the 92 Plus. Patching your calculator with HW2Patch is now the same as with Maxmem: you patch it on your computer and you send it to your calculator with TIB Receiver.

Also, I'm gonna let Thomas Nussbaumer take the mic for a second:

Please archive TI-Chess before starting on AMS v2.04 or greater, otherwise your calculator may crash. For unknown reasons this will fix [a major] problem. Worse yet, not just TI-Chess is caught by that new AMS/TI mystery, but all larger games! I think on the weekend I will release a new version of TI-Chess which just prevents the user from starting the program if it is not archived. As you can see this is not really a bugfix, but a workaround. It's not a TI-Chess native problem.

does this mean that sketchpad & cabri might work w/o the serial number...just wondering

Its unlikely that they would work on a rom modified any more than maxmem and hw2patch do. It is theoretically possible to modify the rom to work without the serial number, but I shall not divulge how this may be done (most programmers should know how to theoretically do this, and all assembler programmers should know how).

No-Stub Programs Rule!

TI-Chess 3.01 runs flawlessly on my HW 2.00 AMS 2.05 TI-89 (everybody should archive the game or else it'll crash your calculator so much). No-stub programs are extremely cool, too - no need to find/download/transfer/install OS's, libraries, etc. As of what I've been observing lately, I've noticed that more and more no-stub applications/games are being released. I hope that maybe one day, we won't ever have to bother with libraries/OS's anymore (especially with all these incompatibilites with multiple OS's and stuff going on). I used to run Universal OS with a bunch of games but later I realized that it isn't worth keeping a good load of libraries on my calc to launch some games.

Something to mention on the MaxMem patch: why need it? You guys must be hardcore calc gamers or something with about 40 games on your calc! I personally see no reason as to why I should bother for more space as of now (pretty funny how I installed TI's List/Stats editor because I felt I had too much space and had to waste about 350 KB more).

Last thing to mention is the HW2 patch - all my no-stub programs are running perfectly and unless they crash my calc one more time for no apparent reason, I might use the patch. I dunno - I could be missing out of a whole lot though by not installing the patch...just never installed it before. You guys getting any new grub out of it?

Sorry about the lengthy post - Fidel Castro is my father :)

>(pretty funny how I installed TI's List/Stats editor because I felt I had too much space and had to waste about 350 KB more).

I installed all 10 foreign languages, for a total of 11 languages on my calc, just because there are so little games to put on my HW AMS version 2.05. So anyway, when I saw those new things yesterday, I got all excited, because I thought a patch for 2.05 had come out. Sadly, it's all some complicated jumble, that a pee-wee like doesn't undersatnd. :-)

Installed all those languages? Heheh, at least you're making use of your calculator space.

You should try TI-Chess and Queue. Two of my favorite no-stub games which even feature great grayscale graphics and speed. They run extremely fast and never crashes my calculator (you must archive them to be secure). I could be missing out of other no-stub games/applications since I am a newbie who just discovered the greatness of no-stubbers.

No stub directory
Philip Sugimoto Account Info

While on the topic of no stub programs, which at least for Ti89 is efficient enough, I would like to see a directory which references programs according to no-stub vs shelled. (I would also like to see a directory of "useful" programs, non-duplicates, high-quality rated games. I can usually tell by the size of the game file but now when some people include the source that throws that out the window. (I know "Dream On")). No stub is definitely the way to go. Though support for external files is nice. I saw some save game implementation I liked in caveadv.zip.

I would like to see more organization in the assembly 89/92p directory, like the nostub/shelled and C/ASM, and in the source code It would be nice to have C and ASM separate, If any of this is already done, slap me, if not, please consider...

You mean libraries. Nostub programs can have external files, no problem. I am making a RPG (in C), and all the sprite, map, and save data is stored externally (in custom type files). Nostub is definitely the way to go.

Have both! :) And since no (exclamation word) shell works on (exclamation word) HW2 AMS 2.05, I made my own BASIC menu. But 2.05 still kicks (behind).

I also have the famous always up-to-date Phoenix. Works on HW2 AMS 2.05 as well. I beat the "Advanced" level, and am working on beating the "Expert" level. I'm just mad that the radar scrambler is gone on the newer versions! :)

Did you try UniOS? If you did, it would have worked. Either that or you didn't install HW2 patch or you calculator is completely screwy.

Well, the installing the patch is the problem.... I can't! I have HW2 AMS version 2.05. That is, I guess I can now with this new program, who's forum we're in. BUT, I have no idea how to do this external updating thing. If anyone could help me, I'd be very greatful...not to mention I'd link you on my (bad) web site at http://newkai.com, although that'd almost be a punishment.

I also got the Calendar, aka:

Graphik-Calendar for TI-Calculators
Ver. 1.0, June 2000
(c) Thorsten Kempas

This is really cool, and really small, but still ASM. Really cool. You'll find it in the "Misc. Programs" section.

Kai's fun things to do with version 2.05 while waiting for some easy patch:

#1: Load every language.

#2: Load every Flash Ap.

#3: Tell the calc to do 299! That'll keep him/her/it busy for about....oh 30 seconds.

#4: Make stupid useless BASIC programs.

#5: Draw stupid pictures in graph mode.

#6: Crash the calc for fun, and watch him/her/it reload all archieved stuff.

#7: Write a letter to TI in the text editor, telling how much it (is bad), and ask them to include a MS WORD similar text editor in version 2.06.

#8: Type in 99 different Y= equations, and watch him/her/it graph them.

#9: Turn on stupid things such as "leading cursor" after doing #8, and let him/her/it do it again, and take twice as long.

#10: Send your girlfriend/boyfriend's last love letter to you to your calc, and read it in text editor.

#11: Do these all over again.

#12 Write me emails telling me not to do such long posts! :)

Whatever this is, i think that noone is going to do all of it(correct me if i am wrong). This is by far one of the dummest things i have seen. This list of fun things to do while wating is much better:

1.Download SMQ
2.Download TiChess
3.Download SolarStriker
4.Download Phoenix
5.Download any other program that looks appetizing
6.Download DoorsOS ver 0.98
7.Send a "gift" to Xaviar Vassor(doors is "giftware")
8.Send all of these files to your calc
9.Run Doorsos
10. Press shift+on
11. run any ASM file you like

This should keep you a billion times more entertained than doing nothing but using the on calc functions.

1. "noone" is not a word, think "no one" or "nobody"
2. shift-on won't do anything without Doors Explorer installed

Huh :) Do you *think* that future programs will be compatible? I don't. At the moment, the OS's are quite basic : they only modify the program to suit the real addresses of libs and rom calls. But when there will be GTools, Prosit, Whizz and LiteOS' formats, I think you will HAVE to do choices... for each OS has specific purposes and therefore will have specific functions :( It's sad but it's like that. I'm not even sure that LiteOS will be able to execute classical programs...

And if you ask me why I'm assuming such things, that's because I'm the programmer of GTools (multitasking OS not yet released)... and when I look at Prosit, I see that, eg, graphical functions are oriented in a completely different way. And there will be better games, but you won't be able to run them all :(

I'm not sure about compatibility for future games/applications but as of what I'm seeing now, all the no-stub programs I run on my HW 2.00 AMS 2.05 run flawlessly (although in some cases some games/apps run a bit too fast on my calc because the author based the application on a HW1 calc).

If those no-stub programs run on my HW2 AMS 2.05 calc and on a HW1 AMS 1.05 calc, then I'm certainly sure that compatibility amongst no-stub programs is great.
