TI-Chess v3.00
Posted by Nick on 12 August 2000, 03:22 GMT

TIChess v3.00 Purple Monkey DishwasherThis has been hyped since about when the TI-99 came out, and it does look like Thomas "I Rock Nick's World" Nussbaumer has made good on his many promises. 89 and 92 Plus versions of TI-Chess v3.00 are now available. The features are too numerous for the human mind to accurately comprehend at once, so read this verrrry sloooowly:

  • Works on all AMS versions up to v2.05 and both hardware versions. All permutations considered! Hooray!
  • Grayscale graphics, tons of nifty eye candy to look at during, uh, whenever you happen to play calculator games :p
  • All the rules of chess (my favorite is en passant) implemented
  • Two different piece sets, sets of chess puzzles for training (lord knows I need it: I really do poorly at chess. My dad beats me routinely. It's sad.), chess clocks, a graphical menu system of some kind, and five levels of difficulty
  • Written in C code and "shell-less:" doesn't require any specific shell to be run!

That's all that can be said. Download this game. Now. GO! GOGOGOGOGO!

Besides the gray-scale support, can anyone tell me what is the main difference between TI-Chess V2.01 and TI-Chess V3.0? Is the new version as stable as the previous version? TI-Chess 2.01 runs well in my TI-89 though. Hey, that is my favorite game! AI is the best one, but kind slow in higher level.

In 3.00 the complete Userinterface gots restructured. The engine (AI) itself was not touched. Its as stable as 2.01.
The next release will focus again on the engine and will bring the missing "opening books" feature, which will makes the playstyle of the program configurable in the beginning of a game.

The "gray-scale support" wasn't a difference between 2.01 and 3.0. 2.01 had greyscale as well.

I'm pretty sure it's stable, because (1) there aren't many, if any, changes in the engine, and (2) it works fine on my calculator.

Higher levels? I can barely beat it on level 1. That is just because I suck; I can still beat people less experienced at chess than me!

Heh, don't feel bad... the AI on Level 1 beats me all the time too :/

Well, that's what the training puzzles are for!

Speaking of the training puzzles, when it says "mate in 2 plies, 4 plies, etc." is that supposed to mean that you can get checkmate in 2 turns, 4 turns, etc.?

Maybe it is just that poor english sneaking in there again, eh?

"Plies" is the correct term for "turns" in the chess world, isn't it?

Or "moves" - I've heard "moves" used much more often.

I think this depends on what "language" you are refering. Indeed I should keep out my technical referencing. I have read too much chess programming literature. So I'm a little bit miss-educated on this topic ;-)

This is said in the same tone of voice as the narrator on Comedy Central commercials:

"Best program for any calculator... ever."

TIChess people, although I know you get a lot of this kinda stuff, I just wanted you to know that your hard work is appreciated by one more person :)

I don't know what's wrong but i know what to do about the problem. You have to archive the TI-chess files and all other ASM games and programs on your calculator. Now you should be able to run the game everytime you want.

Thanks, i think i know what's wrong. I downloaded connect45 from Ti-chess team, and i put it on and i also put the 2.03 from the connect45 as well. That's why i couldn't run ticstart. I had to reinstall AMS 2.05 all over.
THANKS!!!
