Detached Solutions Releases MirageOS v1.0 for TI-83+
Posted by Eric on 26 July 2000, 08:13 GMT

MirageOS v1.0w00t. That's all I have to say. Wait, no it isn't. The newly formed Detached Solutions, made up of various members of the TCPA, has released both their new website and their long-awaited shell, MirageOS, for the TI-83+. What's so good about MirageOS, you ask? Well, for starters, it's a FLASH application. It contains a gargantuan number of features for both users and programmers, and supports both Assembly and BASIC programs. It even includes TI-82 emulation for Ash and CrASH.

You can download this uberleet shell here or visit its home page here. In addition, a huge number of ports and new programs for MirageOS have either been released or are currently in the works.

MirageOS contains a huge number of features that are quite revolutionary to TI calculators. A sampling of these is below:

  • MirageOS supports many different program formats, including MirageOS-specific, Ion, BASIC, TI-OS ASM, Ash, and CrASH. With MirageOS, you'll be able to run more of the programs you need from one shell.
  • MirageOS gives the option of many external interfaces. It provides four built-in GUIs, but you can also have a command line interface if you'd like too. This means that you can make MirageOS look however way you want it.
  • One of my personal favorites is the tasker interrupt, which allows MirageOS to perform many functions while Ion and MirageOS programs are executing. For example, you can use a hotkey to change the contrast, quit and save the game immediately (e.g. teacher key), speed up the game, and even take screenshots of programs.
  • MirageOS contains excellent documentation for both users and developers. You can view its user manual here and see its Developer Notes here.

These are just a sampling of the features included in MirageOS. As you can see, Detached Solutions has obviously spent a huge amount of time on this great new shell, so be sure to check it out ASAP. Also be sure to visit MirageOS's Home Page. Congratulations to Detached Solutions!

Thank God. We have finally got Mega Man and Penquins on the 83+. This is a break through, but does the emulation work perfect? Will RTerm82 work on the 83+? Great Job!!!

No, emulation is not perfect. In our testing, the vast majority of programs worked, but not all (for various reasons). The main two groups of programs that wont work are the really huge ones (ie. Joltima and Dying Eyes) or the ones that directly access the VAT (ie. Penguins and Vertigo). There's not much we can do about the first case, but we may be able to get some of the second group working in a future version of MirageOS.

No Megaman. No Penquins. NO FUN. There is no Mario or MM port or clone or anything for the 83+. I am not whining. I have tried to port them 83 version of Mega Man to ION and I have tried to build a Mario type game. Mega Man crahsed, probally becuase I suck @ programing and I gave up on Mario. Plase someone help me with Mega Man (For personal use ONLY!!! Not for a public release!!!)

If i new I could release Megaman as a ported game without getting into trounle I would. Virtual TI runs Megaman ION good until the actual game starts then it crashes. A real 83+ crahses as soon as you run it. I can ask to release it, but I think I have asked before and got no response. I think it needs a good sprite routine and sinse I have yet to use ionPutSprite without it crashing, no MegaMan from me :( Besides, I don't know how to fix it.

MegaMan can be released!!!

I just got permission from Dave Jaklitsch to publicly release MegaMan ION after it is completed. I don't know if I will ever finish this, but I guess any one can help. I have already changed all the ROM calls I think.

I know that emulation is a pain in the ass to implement, but it rocks!!! Good job for this kick ass shell, I am very impressed, It made me pick up my Ti-83 plus once again.

I may be wrong, but I believe that this is not true emulation. I thought that true emulation is when you run machine code for one chip on a *different* chip. I think that MirageOS simply fixes the ROM calls, and that sort of thing. However, I personally still would not want to do it, so it is impressive. Now getting TI-83 programs to work on the 68k chips. That would be ***IMPRESSIVE***.

I don't think it would be to hard tp get ION programs on the 89. They did it for the 86, bu the 86 is NOT the 89. Maybe some people should do this...

Unfortunately, it's almost certainly impossible to have the TI-89 emulate the 86,85,83,or 82, because it uses a different processor (Motorola 68000 as opposed to Z80). Calculator emulation between the 82 and 83+ isn't nearly as difficult, because they both use the same processor. However, it's still no easy task, because of the different screen sizes and different romcalls and such. The programmers of Detatched Solutions deserve, at the very least, a ticker tape parade for their efforts. Wonderful job!

Ever used Rusty Wagner's Virtual TI? The X86 Processor seems to emulate the the Z80 fine.

Yah, but ever noticed that it takes at least a Pentium 75 to run it? And thats not full speed... We're talkin a 10 mhz calc... emulating a 4 mhz calc... general rule is you need a processor at least 2.5 - 3 times as fast as the processor your trying to emulate to achieve acceptable emulation. Now z80 emulation on the 68k _can_ be done... and has been... look at the Spectrum emulator... it's emulating z80, given, its not full speed, but it _can_ be done.

psst....you know how you said at least 2.5 times as fast. well, 2.5 * 4 = 10

You're right...did you notice that he also said that it can be done? Read the post.

Yeah. It can be done, but VERY slowly. That's why he was negative about it.

Actually, most TI calculators are 6 mhz, not 4.

Wow, now the 83+ has something the 86 has always had: emulation :)

Seriously, though, great job; it makes me feel like I should try to program something better than what I can do...anybody want Gunstar Heroes for the 86? :P
