Nick Disabato Releases Random Numbar Generator
Posted by Nick on 19 July 2000, 21:19 GMT

Wacky Fun Random Numbar Generator v1.00000069WORD! In another display of programming finesse that once again leaves the TI "community" in hushed awe, Nick Disabato has released Wacky Fun Random Numbar Generator v1.00000069 for the TI-86.

Written in BASIC, this very well could be the absolute apex in random number guessing games for years - nay, eons to come. Though it's true that Nick borrowed the idea from Phil Genera, surely he borrowed the code from no source other than himself.

According to Steve Whittaker, file archiver at ticalc.org, "This could be the greatest game ever written. I've never had so much fun in my life. In fact, it's just slightly less entertaining than [censored]."

Added Steve, "This could, in some fashion, help a great deal to developing a new ROM image for the TI-89, as well."

Magnus Hagander, one of the creators of ZShell, was reported as saying, "That punk kid made something cooler than ZS!! I'll kill him!"

A ticker tape parade is planned down LaSalle Street in Chicago for Nick's contributions to humankind. Millions of tax dollars are being poured into the last-minute project.

Richard P. Feynman, professor at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY; was quoted as describing the program as "revolutionary to developing a unified field theory." Others have claimed it has caused them to learn Sanskrit.

It's about time. There hasn't been a fake news article for a LONG time. Good job Nicky!

If the best we can do is fake news when its not a holiday or April Fool's Day, we need to start doing some newsworthy work. Good job though, Nick!

Perhaps we could have something about the unsung programmers (amateur programmers) of the TI Community instead of just news about the master programmers like Patrick Davidson and Xavier Vassor.

I expect it to set the record for the most comments on any news item. Unless, of course, someone foolishly posts some more news in the next few days which moves it off the front page.

Yes, but now split news items make it completely safe. This page (which will, VERY SOON, become even larger) is of course now safe for viewing also.

Probably several, since its formatted similarly to entering stuff into the cas on the 89/92(+)

The only thing that might keep this article from having as many comments as the anarchy post is the fact that the anarchy post had almost no restrictions.

I need to read that thing in completion sometime...
at this rate, i'll be paying ticalc.org at least minimum wage, just from $(1/(5[pi]/18)[radians to degrees]) per post:)

Well, we're now up to around 345 comments, so the situation should be worse. But guess what! Now that the news is on multiple pages, there should be no problem! Unless, of course, two of the items relating to each other an on different pages. Then, there would be a disaster.

I tend to do more comments than that in one hour, but these stats are weighed by enormous amounts of tangentally related, barely coherent posts at 2am or later on weekends.

I think my record for comments in one hour was about 20 in one hour, but on two or three different boards.

The anarchy trial only has so many comments because discussions roamed freely and almost unrestrained. However, it can be beat if we contribute LOTS of relevant comments to the cause.

I've already posted at least 6 comments in less than two hours of online time (so I slept in between the two segments). Many people have already posted more comments than myself.

After spending a half-hour reading about 30% of the "News Anarchy Trial" board, I'm VERY glad that there was a bunch of self-government on the board, because if there was not, this message board wouldn't exist.

Anyways, to the point: the anarchy trial board had several posts that were some form of peer-governing, which likely saved the message board privelege. They also consumed several posts, as did flame wars (estimated total from those:~100). Despite these numerical advantages, we can still beat them!

Yes, slightly forbidden, where 'slightly' means 'against ticalc.org or one of its staff members'. If you flame anyone else, you should get away with it with no problems.

That's why I usually browse message boards with two windows on the board. Apparently you do remember some comments pretty well. Flames only do good if constructive and used sparingly and in context.

That would be hard to do. If you just mean you and me from posting, that could be sidestepped by dumping our old sns and getting new ones under pseudonyms. Bios would have to be dropped, but that's a small price to pay for our constitutional right. There's also the theoretical possiblity of involvement of barristers. We need not forget that Nick does not have absolute power over ticalc.org, as that is reserved for who owns the server. I think that's Magnus, but i'm not entirely sure (Van Halen is a slight bit distracting).

It seems that both of us are doing far more than our part to the cause. Are we seeing who can post the most on-topic comments? If we are, we may very well be at least 1/4 of all posts on this particular board.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Nick Disabato Releases Random Numbar Generator

I'm not sure. It depends on what you mean by 'on-topic' ... many posts on the Anarchy Trial board weren't really directly pertaining to the topic (though they did give ideas about what the results of anarchy would be, so they did at least relate indirectly).

Then it depends on what the requirements are for 'constructiveness' and 'relevance'. Of course, since Random Number Generator contains the entire universe (and infinitely much more) clearly anything is relevant to it.
