DoorsOS II v0.98, Doors Explorer v2.02
Posted by Eric on 13 July 2000, 03:55 GMT
The news comes to us from James Griffith: the Doors Team has released DoorsOS II v0.98 and Doors Explorer v2.02. The new version includes some bugfixes and new features, so be sure to check it out. For you Frenchies out there, there's a French version included as well. Download it now for the TI-89 and the TI-92 Plus. Update (Nick): I told Eric that if he messed up this news item, I wouldn't help him on his math midterm. Since I wouldn't have helped him anyway, this probably partially contributed to his incomplete news item postage. It's no matter, though. You can snag yourself up some Developer Version action for the 89 and the 92 Plus. Furthermore, if you enjoy your Doors Explorer raw and uncensored, you can get that as well; for the 89 and the 92 Plus.

Lets see...
I got on the internet, went to ticalc.org, found doorsos, downloaded the explorer and os. I installed doorsos on my calculator and SMQ screwed up my calculator. I yanked out the batterys, put them back in, installed doors v2.02 in my calc, and to my surprise, I GOT THAT ADDRESS ERROR THAT I HAVEN'T GOTTEN SINCE I SWITCHED TO TEOS!!!!
After that, I put doors explorer 2.01 back on my calculator, I didn't benefit from this version of doorsos.

This is all well and good, but the cozy feeling I have with Universal OS on my calc can't be topped by a new version of doors. Thus far, I have had no errors on my asm2.04 HW 1 TI 89 while I have had Unios installed. The advantages of the newer, faster, Var-Link screen of 2.04 and the uncrashable Universal OS outweigh the idea of a new Doors OS. That is why I shall stay with Unios.

Yes , I still cannot understand what's the magic inside Unios that doesn't have doorsos or Teos. With unios you'll get the best ratio of compatibility with any Ams. Phoenix, falldown, Pipeline, smquest, sonic, zelda89, etc, etc, etc . mine is HW1 ams2.04.

DoorsOS is certainly a good effort, and I tried both DoorsOS, TeOS, and Universal OS. I have a TI-92+ HW2, AMS v2.04
I have had the best luck with Universal OS, which runs Phoenix, TI-Chess, and two other games without any problems. On the other hand, DoorsOS crashed on Phoenix the last time I checked. And TeOS had some problems too.

DoosOS is a good shell I have to admit. I have tried others and like this on best of all. But I think 0.98 is not as good as 0.97 was or should have been, it seems slower to me and creates a file appsdat on my calc whenever I get an ASM error or some other error which is annoying and the running of Basic progs is much slower and different in 0.98. For some reason 0.98 was not all that I expected it to be, was expecting a few changes the ones stated and the same performance as 0.97 but thats not what I got, got bug fixes and new ones (see above) and slower performance. I think I will stick with 0.97 till I see some improvment (new version 0.99) or something.

I have personally always used Doors OS, but I am now thinking about trying out some other shells. I did try out a few other ones but they crashed my calc... I have not tried Universal OS or Te-os yet...
Anyway, getting to the point... I have a directory with a lot of assembly programs (games) and when I go down to about the 5th or 6th prog (the first few work fine) when I try to execute the assembly program it asks me what file I want to run it with... it shouldn't ask me that, an assembly program runs itself, at least last time I checked... anyway, it's just one program that does that... then all programs below that one work, but they actually run the program above them (ex. I have Nibble, then Nibbles right below it, and I run Nibbles, but it runs Nibble) I hope I have explained it thouroughly enough, if not just ask me for more...
