Graphics Studio and Sokomize v0.99
Posted by Nick on 5 June 2000, 03:53 GMT

Graphics Studio [thumbnail]ACKPTH! It's you! You'd want news, wouldn't you.
Here:

Our own Corey Taylor and the incredibly famous Rusty Wagner have released another great Windows program, Graphics Studio (Calculator Version). This program allows you to make graphics (duh) for assembly programs on one's calculator. It works much like many icon editors do - pixel by pixel. It also has another great feature: allowing the user to import bitmaps to be used. Size and/or color isn't an issue, either; it also takes a very short time to convert them. I do this to edit my icons in Photoshop, and it's really nice once you get used to it. It's good to see them making such easy-to-use development tools. A version for the Game Boy Color is coming out soon as well. A thumbnailed screenshot is above: click on it to view the whole thing.

Also, Thomas Nussbaumer has updated Sokomize to v0.99. New changes include the addition of a title screen, various bugfixes, and alterations due to the new TI-GCC compiler. By v1.00, he hopes to have 100(!) levels designed. You can help him out by sending levels in .89t or .9xt form to Thomas via email. Download Sokomize v0.99 for the 89 and/or the 92 Plus.

Finally, Jonah Cohen told me to add a little blurb in someplace that Code Converter v.1 is out - and I quote - "a dos program which allows you to easily change the style in your Z80 source code by changing the indentation and label style." Check this out soon - it looks really good, especially considering it's still under development.

Ah, that Code Converter is pretty cool :) I've actually already made one for 68k assembly, and it's pretty good, as long as your code has moderate formatting :)

Very interesting, all three of these. I can already see the assembly "movies" (which look possible, if not simple) made by this editor...and the much easier to use map editors for games yet to come out.

Mmmmmmmm. . . . point and click interfaces. . . .*drools* Auuggggggggg.

well, I haven't tried the program myself, but are there animations made easier?

Check it, all the way, baby. (alright, they keep showing austin powers one right after the other)

Yea, animations are very easy...to output or preview. Can specify everything, time, next tile/etc.

In the version 3.0 of my TI-GCC IDE, you'll be able to convert AVIs and play them on your calculator. I only wonder if there would be a memory problem, since you can't transmit programs directly into the archive.

Well, having looked into it already, I would say it would be better to scrap having to make an convert avi's etc. Why don't we just produce a compression factor and code? Could univeralize it between us.

Ziped (and auto unziped before use)

black and white (1 plane?)
we could draw every other line to get higher frame rates. (like a tv?) sacrificing every other frame to something inbetwen.

Greyscale: We would be able to use the black and white engine and compensate for the 2/3 1/3 in our encoding.
(we'd already be flipping through the frames, and we wouldn't have to ues seporate ltgrey and drkgry frames
) (each pixle would be staggered).
This requires high frame rates.(we got good enough ones now though, and a complicated converter (must account for multiple frames, pixles, dithering, and shade )
The converter could be off calc... so thats not a performance prob.

video with motion in only a small amt of scrn could be broken into rectangular segments, this might be tough.
Merging a greyscale background with video in a small window seems complicated. dithered b&w

Partial screen seems ok.

I was thinking about that too, but before gfx studio came out. I wanted to see just how much image data a calc could hold (my little 83, that is). Spurred on by my first greyscale image on a calc, I began to wonder just how many levels og greyscale a calc could show. I then expanded on this idea saying: "well, since refresh rates would get you anyway before you got to 255 greys, [and I KNOW there isn't enough mem for that anyway] why don't I fill up the memory with sequential 3 level greyscale images? Like that from a video or something? [Imagine: home movies on-calc]"

Perhaps someday my wistful thinking will come true

Kind of funny how Nick thinks everything revolves around calculators. The calculator version of GStudio is a port of the Game Boy version.

Speaking of the incredibly famous Rusty Wagner, I seem to be having trouble with VTI 2.5 -- it will not give me the rom of my TI-89. Mine is a HW1 AMS 2.03. If anyone can help, please post a message or mail me.

Thank you.

I don't know how to tell you how hard me and rusty tried to reproduce all of your ROM dump problems in college. We still couldn't get 90% of them to reproduce.

It might be the computer speed. I had transmission problems with VTI because my computer was too slow. Then I tried it with a faster one, and it worked.

The problem is not the speed of my computer, I can assure you. Is a PIII 550 with 128 megs of RAM too slow these days?

You could get the rom update file from TI, run the extraction program to get the file, then locate the file and copy it to your VTI folder. It works perfectly fine, but it is illegal if you don't own the calculator.

A little annoucement,

v1.1 just has 2 little bug fixes that we didn't realize weren't fixed in the first calc version. And i had a little querk I found changed. I kill at testing programs ;)

A small clear tile bug, and in the map, the fill routines (used also in rectangle) didn't show the full metatile.

No not yet. Animations will be part of Sokomize 2.0 which will arrive at the End of July (after I finished work on TI-Chess 3.0).
BTW: Sokomize 0.99 contains an ugly bug in its grayscale support which makes it unplayable on some calculators, but works fine on the VTI. To due the fact that no one has sent levels until now I have to collect and port the levels by my own. Until now 94 levels are done and 44 of them are really hard. I would call them "brain breakers". I wonder if someone will manage to solve them.
Sokomize v1.0 will be released at the end of the week and will come with a quick save/restore feature and SHIFT+direction key scrolling (+ min. 94 levels).

Can anyone tell me whether or not this program will work for ALL calculators? Including making the coding necessary for greyscale?
