Void.calc.org Reopens, macross2000.org Released
Posted by Nick on 13 March 2000, 03:56 GMT

Two rehabbed delectable sites for you to train your eyeballs upon:
The Void Productions has completely redone their site so it now lacks the clashy colors of old times. Sam Heald and Derrick Ward, the two original members, gave me the heads-up on this one. They have also added four heretofore completely unknown new members to the team: Ahmed El-Helw, Harper Maddox, Kouri Rosenberg, and Wouter Demuynck. They are looking for two or three talented artists to join the group to help them with current and future projects. If you are interested, please contact Sam.

Also, Mikel Blanchard filled my email box with strange ramblings a day or so ago regarding the opening of Macross Software's new site. They have a domain name and everything - quite impressive. IMHO, domain names always help to make web sites better, but that's just my opinion.

Just one question, though - what will Macross do in 2001? :)

Ive always wanted to say that.
Ive loaded this page at least 5 to 10 times, since it opened and this is the first time that this has happened.

BTW, if you are a talented artist talk to Sam.

When you say artist, do you mean somebody that knows how to make cool graphics in ASM or somebody that can make an image in the .jpg format that the rest of the team will convert to something the calc can read? I'm a little confused but may be able to help.

The types of images that an artist would construct for our calculator games range from a 96x64 title image (in 4 color greyscale or B/W) to a simple 8x8 B/W sprite. We have plenty of utilities to convert images (either bmp or pcx, two common formats) to usable assembly code. and we are willing to teach the artists how to convert these images to code with these tools.

So would you ask for sample images to see if the person was qualified?

Sure, if you've got some art you'd like to show us, go right ahead. Another thing you could do is enter the art contest we have going right now (see void.calc.org for more information) and attach a note of your intent to join.

Hey Nick, you have a little html error, when it says "Contact Sam", the link for "Sam" should be mailto:evil_sam@hotmail.com, you have it as just a normal link... so it points to ticalc.org/evil_sam@hotmail.com

Just thought I'd let you know.

Is anyone else annoyed by the fact that Macross not only imitated the Firing Squad's design, but that some of their original ones were better? Can't we at least see a real design rather than a cheesy copy (and it IS a copy, regardless of whether or not the HTML/CGI is rewritten)?

We never claimed to have an original site design and even admitted to using Thresh's site. Check the about us page on Macross. But you are mistaken about rewritten cgi. Our code is totally different and completely original to us. True we're not artists and used Thresh as an example, but don't scrutinize our code :)

Now aside from that which old design did you think was better?

No, I read the whole message board thread about how you rewrote the CGI - but it still has the same end effect. And just as paraphrasing is plagiarism, so is copying a site's design (ideas) but not exactly following its code (words).

I kinda liked that last red one myself, or even the neat design that one of the .plans had running at one point. . .

It doesn't appear that you understand what I'm saying. No code was rewritten. We never had access to the code used on firingsquad. We never even intended to use cgi code and it was all added in later. The code Macross uses is COMPLETELY original. The only thing of Thresh's we used was the superficial look; guilty as charged :)

Wow, quite a team has been put together. I'd have to say that this is the most promising group of (ASM) programers as of now, hopefully we'll get some great games out for the 83 (or for the 86, and then ported to the 83.)

Heretofor? Now even I think Nick is running out of words!

A question: Has anybody even considered a Zelda II project? I know a leet compression algorithm used in the original game. (north castle was 54 bytes, the cave with the trophy was 43 bytes...)

First, someone has to finish Zelda I... I've seen maybe three good ones for different calcs, none of them finished. And if I remember correctly, wasn't Zelda II one of the worst games ever made?

Zelda II was an awesome game, it was just a different style than the first one. I also think hta because of this it would be cool to see a port of this game to the calculator just because of the different graphics and storyline, but I also think that some of the best gaems are ones that aren't trying to copy a game.

That's not true. I have a domain name for my site and it's crappy as always.

Well, my domain is nice. Its .web.com, and its free; more people should get web.com domains, if they can't afford .com ones.

You mean a .web.com subdomain, like .cjb.net is a subdomain.

What will Macross do in 2001, you ask? They'll just buy another one from <shameless plug> www.alphapython.com for 20 bucks! </shameless plug>

Ok, this is really pissing me off. I haven't been able to get on Dimension-TI since it closed for the new server. Yes, I know the new server is up, but I still get a blank white page, not even the little Dimension-TI title thing saying it will be up soon. And that means I can't get on TCPA, or Void Productions, 2 of my favorite programming groups (which makes this on topic!). Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong with my computer?

Hmm, I asked 2 people who have cable modems to try to go to the site and they got to it... maybe it won't let any dial-up connect to the server? :(
