Geometer's Sketchpad For the 92 Plus
Posted by Nick on 4 March 2000, 21:24 GMT

Geometer's SketchpadIn another attempt to justify the existence of the 92 Plus, TI has released The Geometer's Sketchpad for the 92 Plus. This only works for AMS v2.03 and it is only released for the 92 Plus. It lets you create and analyze mathematical models and geometric diagrams. It is included in the purchase price of the TI-92 Plus (re: it's free). This can be a fantastic program for anyone who is doing geometry, but ironically, nobody in a geometry class (re: high school sophomores) would drop $160-180 on a TI-92 Plus. Download it from this page.

Some schools will shell out several thousand dollars for TI-92s for classes

But kids won't be buying them for their own personal use. If they don't know how to use a 92 Plus from the beginning, teachers will have to teach students how to use them, and that takes up a great deal of class time (especially just for doing geometric stuff on a calculator). Teachers (and students) will see it as a great waste of time, and they won't want to do it.

Hey, I'm in 8th grade and I shelled out that much for my 89... then again I'm a fool.

Well, don't say that much. I'm in 8th and i got a 92
But i found it RIDICOLUSOLY large. I mean whose heard of a calculator the size of a textbook, and i could not find places to put it. So, i returned it and got a 89, saved 30 bucks and now have a nifty go anywhere mathamatical companion that fits in my pocket.

Three years ago, I bought a TI-92 while in a geometry class in the 8th grade. I, for one, love it.

I virtually never use it for math- I take my history and science notes on it (yes, I can type that fast on it.)

When I first got my 92 it seemed really large to me too. But I got used to it really quick, and now I'd never give it up for an 89. Quite a few of my friends have an 89, but I prefer my 92+. It fits my hands better, keys aren't doubled up as much, and I like the wide screen a lot better. I wish people would give it credit as a really good calculator instead of saying "Oh, cool program, but no one uses the 92/92+ anyway" when something like this comes out.

I had a 92 for 2 years, but I found it really too big (and not enough mem & games), so I bought an 89.

plus i have an 86 and an 82. i think i'm a calculator freak. but the 89 is the best 1 anyway
so SUK A CHICKEN! lol

Jesus, you dont need a 89 in 8th grade...whats the point, so you can waste your time playing the best games? you dont even really need a calculator in 8th grade, unless of course you do intigration stuff in 8th grade now

Just thought I'd mention that this is a *very* nice application. Much better than the other cabri app. Even if you're not in geometry, or don't like geometry, I'd suggest giving it a download just to see how it is (since it is free and all...).

Why in the Hell doesn't (won't!!!) TI realease a nifty free app. like this for the 89? I shelled out $135 bucks for that and I can't even draw on the damn thing!!! Jeez, I shoulda bought a freakin' Game Gear (as the 92 is called @ my school), they get all the cool stuff!!!

I agree that it is a good program, but I don't see any practical uses for any geometry class. Any high school geometry class wouldn't go into significant depth where the program comes in handy. I have only used geometry programs when I am doing math at contest levels. Anything my high school would do regarding this could be avoided because the teachers *love* cabri geometry on the computer.

I do have one question: TI has only included so much memory for flash apps etc. Is this amount of memory limited by the processor's capabilities? If not, why don't they sell better plus modules? I tried installing the sketchpad as well as the list program, but only had room for one. What is the point in only being able to have one flash application at a time if they offer several free ones?

I am in the advanced Geometry class at my school and we use Geometer's Sketchpad for Windows 95 every once in a while. It seems to be a nice way for some of the kids to learn geometry concepts. I wish (only for this, though) that I had a 92+ instead of an 89 so I could sit with my calculator and do some of the stuff that the other people were doing on computers.

I think, screen of TI89 is too small for comfort geometry use, so the program is released only for TI89 plus.

I'm not in geometry and I'd spend $200 for a 92 plus with the geometer's sketch pad. I did have a 92 with the plus module, but I sold it. Now, maybe I should buy the newer 92 plus...

WTF??!?!!

How come the TI-92+ only has one FlashApp for sale, whereas the TI-89 has two? Also how come both Cabri and Geometer's Sketchpad are *FREE* for the TI-92+? The TI-89 only gets a dinky List Editor!!!!?!?!?! WTF is TI thinking? I think there are more TI-89 users and TI should be churning out TI-89 FlashApps not TI-92+ and TI-83+ ones! What's going on?

Note: I do not mean to offend any TI-83+/92+ owners, but you guys get more free apps, and I think that's not fair :(

Why are the geometry apps free for the TI-92+? Why does the TI-92+ cost significantly more the the TI-89 (other than the larger screen/keyboard, which is a slightly higher cost)? You've guessed it, when you purchase a TI-92(+) you've also basically purchased a license for the geometry applications as well (TI has to pay fees on the geometry apps I would assume, since they are made/copywrite by outside companies).

Re: Re: WTF??!?!!

What do you mean by significantly more? The 92+'s where I live aren't THAT much more than the 89's. I don't think it would be extremely difficult for TI to make an 89 version for their 89 customers. I believe that TI should put out more programs for the 89. For example, that program the 83+ has that allows you to choose a startup program or picture for your calc. They could easily make this program for any of the flash calcs, but they don't. I just hope this will change soon (Maybe with the release of the SDK

I don't know where you live, but at least where I live 89's are around $140 and 92+'s are around $180-$200. I'd call that significant. As for applications, give them time! Keep in mind that the TI-89/TI-92+, with ability for modularized applications (ams 2.03) is relativly new. Applications will continue to come out, just be patient. (As for the fact that there are already two 92+ geometry apps, one was already written for the 92 and just had to be made into the app, and I'll bet TI didn't even write the majority of the other one.)
