This is very cool and I am glad the TI community gets lots of news to keep it alive. Anyways I have 2 urgent question about my 89 and I hope somebody here can help because I have a math test coming up here...

1.) When I do something like 2/9 on the homescreen, the 89 returns "2/9" - Why is this and do I have to solve all of these things like an equation to get a decimal answer?

2.) Are cube roots possible? This calc was $170 so I would hope they are possible.

I would greatly appreciate a reply from anyone who knows the answers to these questions!

To do cube roots you can do (for example):

x^(1/3)

There's probably an nth root function somewhere, I haven't used a ti89 for years.

Nth roots, AFAIK, do not exist on the 89.

The 89 has symbolic manipulation capabilities. It returns the exact value of an expression and will simplify. For example, if you typed 4/18 it would return 2/9. To get an approximation for 2/9 use the diamond key before pressing enter. If you'll notice, above the enter key in green is the approximation sybmol.

And for the cube root, I'm not aware of an xth root function, what the other guy said about raising a number to (1/x) works great though. And remember, for decimal approximations you need to use [diamond] [enter].

how much total memory does the TI-83 have? (total memory and user-available memory)

The 83 has 27k user available RAM

The 83+ has 24k user available RAM and 160k user available FLASH ROM

I don't know how much total, it is not on TI's "Graphing Calculator Comparison" chart - www.ti.com/calc/docs/gmtrx.htm It probalbly says on the package of the 83/83+ how much total memory there is (It does for the 86), but I don't have the packages scince I don't have an 83/83+.

I believe the 83 has 32K of RAM and 64K of ROM.

so what's up with this program called "mem adder"? Is it a compressing tool to give the so-called "6x more memory"?

As far as I can tell, all it actually does is print out a bogus "Check RAM..." list. The real list doesn't change at all, so I assume it's just a prank.

No it has 256 KB ROM. Strangely, it doesn't feature nearly as much ROM calls as the 86.

The 83/83+ has 256kb of ROM? That can't be right, the 89's ROM is only 64kb and ...its the 89...way more graphical, many more functions and stuff. Also, the processor is much more complex. I am pretty sure that there is only 32 or 64kb of ROM on the 83. 32k user ram, about 27 available at any one time.
