IonGuru and Chicken Shoot
Posted by Nick on 19 February 2000, 05:21 GMT

Chicken ShootWarning: This news item contains words that nobody would even think of using in daily conversation.
When you thought the concept of the Windows .HLP file couldn't get any cooler, Matt Hernandez had to shock and discredit you. IonGuru v1.0 is a nifty little help file thingy that should help newbies get better acquaintanted with programming for the TI-83 (and 83 Plus)'s Ion shell. It also includes a lot of nifty-doodle utilities that you can use to compile and toy with your creation(s).
Chicken Shoot is another equally zip-zop-zabulous game from Harper Maddox. You have to shoot chickens as fast as possible. It's a pretty straightforward game. Harper tells you to "shoot in the opposite direction of the chicken" but I doubt there's any validity to that statement *g*. This should be bug-free. Grab it for the 82 (CrASH), the 83 (SOS and Ion), and the 83 Plus (Ion).

Cool, I always wished something would come out so that I can easily program in ION. This is great!!!

btw, first comment (or could be second or third if some other guy got here first ^_^

This is very cool and I am glad the TI community gets lots of news to keep it alive. Anyways I have 2 urgent question about my 89 and I hope somebody here can help because I have a math test coming up here...

1.) When I do something like 2/9 on the homescreen, the 89 returns "2/9" - Why is this and do I have to solve all of these things like an equation to get a decimal answer?

2.) Are cube roots possible? This calc was $170 so I would hope they are possible.

I would greatly appreciate a reply from anyone who knows the answers to these questions!

To do cube roots you can do (for example):

x^(1/3)

There's probably an nth root function somewhere, I haven't used a ti89 for years.

Nth roots, AFAIK, do not exist on the 89.
Use fractional powers. Real men use fractional powers.
Heck, I do! :)

The 89 has symbolic manipulation capabilities. It returns the exact value of an expression and will simplify. For example, if you typed 4/18 it would return 2/9. To get an approximation for 2/9 use the diamond key before pressing enter. If you'll notice, above the enter key in green is the approximation sybmol.

And for the cube root, I'm not aware of an xth root function, what the other guy said about raising a number to (1/x) works great though. And remember, for decimal approximations you need to use [diamond] [enter].

Great Job, Matthew! I always liked the ASMGURU tutorial by James Matthews, so I'm sure this new help file you wrote will help everyone. Also, btw, I redid the Kevtiva Calculator Page, so anyone who wants to, click on the link by my name, and then Click on Spleenworks.

Matt - More on that ID XXXX Secret this weekend.

how much total memory does the TI-83 have? (total memory and user-available memory)

The 83 has 27k user available RAM

The 83+ has 24k user available RAM and 160k user available FLASH ROM

I don't know how much total, it is not on TI's "Graphing Calculator Comparison" chart - www.ti.com/calc/docs/gmtrx.htm It probalbly says on the package of the 83/83+ how much total memory there is (It does for the 86), but I don't have the packages scince I don't have an 83/83+.

I believe the 83 has 32K of RAM and 64K of ROM.

so what's up with this program called "mem adder"? Is it a compressing tool to give the so-called "6x more memory"?

As far as I can tell, all it actually does is print out a bogus "Check RAM..." list. The real list doesn't change at all, so I assume it's just a prank.

No it has 256 KB ROM. Strangely, it doesn't feature nearly as much ROM calls as the 86.

The 83/83+ has 256kb of ROM? That can't be right, the 89's ROM is only 64kb and ...its the 89...way more graphical, many more functions and stuff. Also, the processor is much more complex. I am pretty sure that there is only 32 or 64kb of ROM on the 83. 32k user ram, about 27 available at any one time.

Amazing how many people reply when they have no idea what they are talking about...

82: 32k RAM, 128k ROM
83: 32k RAM, 256K ROM
83+: 32k RAM, 512k ROM (Flash)
85: 32k RAM, 128k ROM
86: 128k RAM, 256k ROM
89: 256k RAM, 2m ROM (Flash)
92: 128k RAM, 1m ROM
92+: 256k RAM, 2m ROM (Flash)

Lets see:

Psycologist: What is your main ambition in life?

Patient: All I've ever wanted to do with my life is shoot chickens on my calculator. Now I've done that I can die happy.

Do you really enjoy shooting chickens? Is it really that exciting? I mean, is it really your main ambition in life?

OK, it's pretty funny, but I'm being cynial at the moment (as usual).

You see, i don't find friendly "bickering" like that. I don't mind that he was just playing around. That's the problem with this community. People get to defensive.
