New Feature: Download Statistics
Posted by Nick on 29 December 1999, 23:23 GMT
In an instant message three or four days ago, I promised to a friend that there wouldn't be anything special for Y2K at ticalc.org. Well, I'm a bad liar; we didn't expect this to be done so soon. :) We have a new feature for you folks here. On every directory page in our archives that contains files, there's a neat little box now that gives a brief overview of that directory's statistics. Number of files, total downloads, the date it was last updated and the most popular file in that directory are all listed. A sample box (from TI-86 Assembly Games) is shown below. Enjoy and have a happy, safe New Year's! Archive Statistics | Number of files | 145 | Last updated | Tuesday, 28 December 1999 | Total downloads | 715,755 | Most popular file | ZTetris 86 v1.1 with 31,728 downloads. | |

While this isn't a bad idea, I wish a comment board would be made available for all the programs in the archives (individual boards; one for each program), so that users could interact with each other and post "mini reviews" of those particular programs to warn others ahead of time that a program can crash their calc., or that it's the best program in its class, etc. This would save time in downloading and searching for just the right programs for our needs.
Plus, it's a convenient way for authors to see exactly what needs to be done to improve their program or what to fix in order to make the program better. That would be really cool!

Everything looks really mangled right now... Browsing
with Mosaic Netscape 0.9, what fun!
Anyways...
That's wonderful and all, but is it really useful,
aside from helping ticalc.org figure out what needs
more storage space?
BTW if this post looks f9xored up, it's because Mozilla 0.9 is really odd...

The little page/magnifying glass icon is not only the wrong color, but it's also not a link. You guys might want to change that.
But it's cool anyway. :)

Hmmm, when Christmas rolled around, I thought for sure ticalc.org would have a fake news item dealing with calculators and Christmas...somehow, someway. As long as you broke your promise, Nick, will we see a fake news item dealing with calcs and New Year's instead? :-) Come to think of it, I haven't seen a fake news item for a while...perhaps because so many people didn't like them? (no, I don't have fake news disabled)
Have a Happy Y2K everyone...hopefully when 2000 rolls in, your brand new TI-89 won't suddenly transform into a circa-1972 TI-2500 DataMath (see URL above). ;-)

congratulations, that's completely useless.
i think it would be more useful for the top 10 or so programs to have a rank placed next to them, or have them show up at the top, or just have options to sort by date, popularity, name, etc.

This won't ever happen, but it would be fun to see the hosted sites rated, by most visited. Again, this will not ever happen.
