Frank Schoep Releases Dragonsoft BASIC to Assembler 83 Interface v0.4 Beta
Posted by Nick on 24 December 1999, 06:15 GMT

BASIC to Assembler ThumbnailWe're giving you folks a Christmas present early! :-) Frank Schoep has just created a Windows program that converts 83 BASIC files to assembly code. The program is called Dragonsoft BASIC to Assembler 83 Interface v0.4 Beta. Extensive documentation has been included in the .zip file. If you can't get this to work perfectly, perhaps you need to download a set of DLL's that Frank has also uploaded. These should fix any problems you have if it can't load.

This looks like an awesome program!! Way to go DragonSoft!! I've already downloaded this thing and looked at it. Now, if only I had a '83! My brother has an '83+, will this work with that? This is the single greatest thing that has happened to basic since Drug Cartel!! This would be great for a '86 too, *wink* *wink*. Unfortunately it seems that any asm programs that this program makes will still be nothing more than glorified BASIC. I mean, no sprites, no power down, and just a little speed upgrade. But anyhow, great job guys, kudos for keeping BASIC alive, at least in a altered form. p.s. I got the ((18/9)-1)st comment!!

There is already something similar to this for the TI-86. If you look on calcity's page (forgot the URL) they have a program to convert from TI-Basic for the 86 to 86 assembly. I am not sure how well it works however because I have yet to have time to try it myself.

Hello dear 'Ron!',

Of course this program will convert the source code and not add extra functions, it wasn't meant to that, though. For the purposes you are writing about, I'm busy making a first Interface Beta of Assembler Games Studio 83. This will make programming (cool) games a hellavu lot easier than writing source code. Wait and see...

Merry Christmas to you all,
Frank Schoep

You can do sprites in BASIC.

It doesn't work, you'll get a run-time error about the path of the file.

All right! Now we'll get a bunch of lame, crappy ASM games that play and look just like BASIC games because, well...they _are_ BASIC games! I'll be looking forward to a "plethora" of TI-83 ASM "Number Guess" games (please don't take me too seriously; I'm not biased against BASIC, I just hope people use this wonderful utility for good instead of evil).

Hey, I know: A utility that converted ASM games to BASIC...j/k

I'm high with the Christmas Spirit; took too many hits of it...let's put up the lights now, shall we:

Problem: This converts the files probably the same way the TI-OS does, which means that all your eliminating is the interpreting. (83's dont need to tokenize basic, do they?) So the end product will gain little, or no benifit, except the fact that its harder to hack and modify an asm program than it is with a basic program.

Thist thing doesn't work at all...it'll only convert ClrHome's and ClrDraws and on other programs in the asm file it just shows the return to basic mode.

Hi Folks,

This version (Interface Beta 0.4) was meant to be a demonstration of the current interface. The only thing it does is display some information and make a TASM header. If there are any ClrHome's encoutered, it will convert them, the SOS name is taken in account, too. Please be patient until there's a more improved version. Nick was a little too positive about this early beta, I think :).

Merry Christmas to you all,
Frank Schoep from Dragonsoft

This sounds cool, but I don't think it deserves front page if it's just an interface test. I've been waiting for something like this since I don't have time to learn Asm right now. Good luck, Frank.

My name's EMan too! (Yay)

Merry Christmas to all. Get lots of presents.

This is the greatest! We can now put the power of asm into the hands of underexperienced and have them crash (accidentaly OR on purpose)every 83 in the school!

Yes, but ClrHome doesn't usually crash, neither does _clrlcdfull. Leave off the RET at the end and then it will crash.

The power of asm comes from the fact that it can do things basic CANT do, and it can do the things basic CAN do in hundreds of ways. Im assuming this program just compiles the program the same way as the TI-OS interprets them, so there is no added "power"
The only good way to put the "power" of asm in the hands of underexpeirienced programmers, teach them the very basics of assembly, and let them make asm modules they can call from their basic programs.

You need two programs for that process.
TASM and Obj83 that can be downloaded here at www.ticalc.org - windows utilities.
In addition you will need the two include files that can be downloaded from Texas Instruments.
