Grayscale Possible on Hardware v2.00!?
Posted by Nick on 23 December 1999, 06:48 GMT

Scott Noveck and Niklas Brunlid have apparently fixed the problems with grayscale on hardware v2.00 calculators. Scott sent me an email with some instructions on how to use these (along with a lot of disclaimers and such) - attached were the libraries. I packaged them all into neat little .zip files (with the email as documentation) and voila. You can download each file here:
Gray4Lib for the TI-89
Gray4Lib for the TI-92 Plus
GraphLib for the TI-89
GraphLib for the TI-92 Plus

Here's the email. Enjoy! :-)

Subject: Grayscale for HW2
Date sent: Thu, 23 Dec 1999 00:12:37 -0500

Here ya go - no need to put my name in the HEADLINE, of course (and wherever you put it, also mention Niklas Brunlid), but here's the relevant info:

graphlibHW2.89z - graphlib for HW2
graphlibHW2.9xz - _exact_ same file as above, but renamed to .9xz
gray4libHW2.89z - gray4lib for HW2
gray4libHW2.9xz - _exact_ same file as above, but renamed to .9xz

Some quick notes:
1.) These should ONLY be used on HW2 calcs - HW1 calcs should keep using old libraries (they CAN use these, but the old versions are faster and flickerless). To check your hardware version, go to the home screen and choose About from the Tools menu (F1) - if it is not specified, then the calc is HW1.

2.) These flicker a lot. Understand that this is hopefully only a temporary fix and is NOT the same method used for greyscale on HW1. Due to hardware limitations, it's a lot slower and will flicker - a small price to pay to get the stupid thing working.

3.) Most, if not all, programs using these greyscale routines should now work fine, minus a little flicker.

4.) gray4lib source is included for programmers using their own greyscale routines. tios::PortSet is undocumented, but it is called as PortSet(*DUP_SCR+4, WORD x2, WORD y2) and causes all tios routines to draw to the buffer at DUP_SCR with coordinates (0,0) through (x2,y2).

For gray4lib:
Author - David Ellsworth <davidell@ticalc.org>
Porter - Rusty Wagner <rusty@acz.org>
Porter - Scott Noveck <scott@acz.org>
Porter - Niklas Brunlid <nbr@ticalc.org>

For graphlib:
Author - Xavier Vassor <xvassor@mail.dotcom.fr>
Author - Cédric Couffignal <deucalion@mail.dotcom.fr>
Porter - Scott Noveck <scott@acz.org>
Porter - Niklas Brunlid <nbr@ticalc.org>

- Scott (too lazy to submit these to the archive normally)

Is there anywhere on the internet where I can downgrade
my calc? I've got AMS 2.03 and am going through game withdrawl! Or are they planning on releasing a fix for V2.03 as well?

email TI to get the lowest version of the AMS your calculator can handle (if its hw1 then ask for 1.00, if its hw2 ask for 1.05)

but finding ROM's anywhere else is pretty much illegal and I wouldn't suggest getting it illegally :P

This absolutely sucks hehe.... I have a HW 1 TI-89 (bought it less than a month before they released HW 2) and thought I could live with it knowing that I had an advantage over HW2. Now this happens, and they are on top again. Life sucks, hehe.

I got my 89 yesterday (12/24/99) and it has hardware version 1 still. How long ago did hardware 2 come out, and what should i do?

Where'd you get your 89?

As for Hardware 2.0, go to the link under my name (or remove the spaces I've added to the URL at the end of this post) as this is all that I can find regarding a release date. Haven't found anything else regarding this.

This is great. I think I am going to get a TI-92+ for Christmas, so it will be great to actually have games.

I can't believe these work! I love playing mario and sf2 on my ti-89 hw2, I hope they fix the slow down and the flickering but I can't complain because this is great.

Just one slightly off topic question:

Which programmers out there are going to buy a Professional or Educaitonal SDK to make free programs/shells/games for the HW 1 that run in the ROM that I can't use?

Am I the only one confused?
TaiGuy  Account Info

With all the buzz over AMS 2.03 and its incompatibility with previous games. I am so, so confused over all these versions of the Ti-89. Could someone who knows what they're talking about please tell me what the different AMS/ROM versions offer that the others don't. And what's the difference between
HW 1 and HW 2? Also with the news over the new grayscale libraries for HW 2, what games are playable with the different HW and ROM configurations. Like what could I run with HW 2 and ROM 2.03? Or HW 2 and ROM 1.05? What in your opinion is the best tradeoff between functionality and entertainment? What Shells do I need to run on the different ROM's? And could someone please translate Kernel 0.6's readme? I don't know french (I take spanish). For all those out there that know what they're doing and are working on the problems I graciously commemorate your time and effort. For the rest of the Ti-XX community like me, we need to gain some work ethic and learn!!

ok..
ams 1.00 works only on hw1 and ams 1.05 works on hw1 and 2. ams 1.05 doesn't like games, so if you have hw1, don't get it. Now, ams 2.03 works on both hw1 and hw2, and it lets you have something like 720k(?) archive memory. you can only use 390k of it on hw1, because of a bug, and the rest can only be used by flash apps. in hw2, you can use all of the archive memory for your personal use (as in street fighter 2)
AMS 2.03 also offers user defined functions in the catalog, and it has collapsable menus in the var-link screen.
The difference between hw1 and hw2 is that hw2 had a modification or something to the lcd screen to speed up complex equations and stuff, but it's giving programmers a hard time to make greyscale programs working like they did in hw1

if anyone has anything to correct or add, just do it, and i'm sorry if i screwed up something

Welp I just finished downgrading to AMS 1.05 on my 92+ HW2, after a week without any games. I installed the new Grayscale libraries, and Sonic MisAdventures. When I tried playing the game, it gave me a few errors about "not enough memory".. so I deleted everything I didn't need, and archived all the rest. Yay! It actually worked! Well, to my dismay... it wasn't exactly "full screen" and I finally know what they mean by "flickering" It gave me a little headache, heh. But all in all, I'd like to thank everyone who made Sma, Doorsos, Grayscale, and everything else I forgot to mention. Keep up the great work! I'd love to see it on AMS2.03 HW2 sometime.

~Manny

PS: For some strange reason, I don't know but doesn't SF2T support grayscale? I didn't see it on mine. And also does anybody know how to make the backgrounds work? My background is always blank.

I have an 89 with HW1 and Rom 1.00, and a 92+ with HW2 with Rom 1.05. I finally got the greyscale to work on my 92+, thanks to those libraries, but street fighter 2 still doesn't work. Its greyscale, but it won't let me do anything from the menu. Any ideas? The 89 is working great with HW1 and Rom 1.00, I can live without the extra ram that the 92+ has... keep up the good work guys.

(there are times when I want to temporarily disable carriage return ;) )

Let me know when someone fixes the flicker y'all are talking about. When everything justifies a HW2 calc (the games, grayscale, mem are all compatible) then I'll want to know if there 's a way I could find the trade-in value of my module-upgraded 92+?

While I "don't" have that option, is there a way someone could make a way to do 16-level gray on HW1? (mainly for pictures)

Another thing: could someone come out with 10, 12, and/or 16-level gray libs for the 92+ HW1? I would mainly use it for better pictures, although games would be nice (especially 3D, btw, when will you guys start porting 3D games from the PC?)
