Reuben Quest: Ev Awakening - Axe Remake
Posted by Ryan on 16 May 2014, 04:25 GMT

RQ:EAAround 10 years ago or so, the world of BASIC games was rocked by Kevin "DJ Omnimaga" Ouellet's outstanding Reuben Quest: Ev Awakening. The stunning adventure-RPG graced many-a-calcs, and rightfully so.

Back then, the big "What if?" question that often appeared revolved around porting BASIC games to ASM. As you may well know, there are many tools that have helped to bridge this gap, with the infamous Axe Parser being noteworthy, to say the least. Many years later, Sorunome has breathed some new life into this classic by doing a full remake of RQ:EA via the Axe Parser! Are you excited yet? You should be! A quick glance at the animated screens and a video of the game in action should be more than proof enough of the fine work done here. Of course, the game looks as gorgeous as it ever did, which is a high praise in and of itself. Beyond that, the recreated experience is as smooth and enjoyable as one could hope for -- a true high-fidelity romp through forests, caverns, and castles. All of this was created with a relatively short turn-around (not including the project's ~9 month hiatus), especially considering the great progress made since the public beta that hit the web just a few weeks ago. Now that's some dedication to the classics!

A big tip of the hat to Sorunome for the outstanding work! This is Sorunome's second feature in less than a year's time, and we can't wait to see what's next. Really, there's not much more to say than "Go play this now!"

I think some of the enemies are too OP, and they appear so much I can't really walk.

I played more of the open beta than I did of this release version, but I found that I had fall flat on my face a few times in battles to best learn when to run and when to fight / use spells as a way to stay ahead of the curve. Definitely took some practice :)

The battling stats did not change, the key is indeed to level up and take use of sleeping in your house :)

Actually in the original game the random encounter rate is not as frequent. It takes between 5 and 15 seconds before running into an enemy. However, the new version runs so fast compared to the original that it might feel like there are more battles.

As for enemy strenght this is typical from most calculator and NES RPGs, except that in Reuben it's not as brutal. When you reach level 2 the early monsters get so much easier.

For the first few battles you need to sleep at your house after every battle. By level 3, every forest monster die in one hit so at that point you don't need to backtrack this often.

Btw not to discourage you, but Reuben series are some of the easiest Ticalc.org RPGs ever (although if we only include the ones I made, the Reuben games are some of the hardest). Back in the days, early enemies in calc RPGs were basically boss-like.

Thanks for the advice.

Did I mention that I suck at most RPGs?

Thanks, keep in mind that I only really worked on the original 20004 TI-BASIC (and Omnicalc) version, though. For the Axe remake I only did a few graphic updates :P
