Retro Feature: Bomberkids 1.0
Posted by Ryan on 14 February 2012, 16:09 GMT

As news editor, I would be remiss if I did not right the wrongs of history. All of the wrongs. Naturally, an important question to ask is "Where does one start?" Thankfully, the origin of our journey is rather easy to triangulate. What with it being Valentine's Day and all, I will start with one of my greatest loves.

Speaking of love, everyone loves Bomberman games. This has been repeatedly established as an inherent truth, one that maintains order throughout the universe. That being the case, one can imagine the degree of beguilement attributed to the absence of official recognition of Bomberkids 1.0 by Julien Solignac.

Bomberkids is essentially a multiplayer-only game, allowing for two players locally and up to four players with a link and two calcs. Featuring power-ups, competitive play, and linkplay of a quality that was far ahead of its time, I could rant about this title for paragraphs. Rather than gush, I think it is far more appropriate to let the words of the community do the software justice:

  • "Download this awesome game today before you waste your lifetime without the best multiplayer game ever written." - Joseph Roth
  • "Bomberkids is amazing!" - moses moses
  • "...this is without any doubt the best multiplayer game for the TI-83+." - N G
  • "The truly most greatest mutliplayer game out there! 10/10" -- nick bugaev
  • "Bomberkids is an awesome game that deserves to be counted among the best assembly games out there..." - Hans Jorgensen

In the years past, there have been many absolutely outstanding Bomberman games that have been featured; Bomberkids may now be counted among them. So get together some friends, link up those calcs, and get blastin'!

I haven't played this, but I have played a 68k version(bomberdude) and I must say those games with an extra long, homemade linking cable can be fun. ;)
Congrats on the feature, Julien. :)

Bomberdude v.095 is a really impressive title, and I've always loved it. I have seriously played that more than any other Bomberman game ever made and, believe me, I've played a *lot* of Bomberman.

That reminds me. There is also a Bomberdude v.096(notice the 6) somewhere. It includes an item that you can control when your bombs go off. That was a very cool update in my opinion. Sadly enough it's not here on ticalc and I don't think you still can download it somewhere. On the autors website there is a download that supposedly is that version but I have checked that several times and I know it sadly isn't. I'll check my computer. Maybe I can find still a copy. ;)

I remember seeing somewhere a long time ago that a version 1.0 was supposed to exist that had major changes. I don't think that I ever actually played it, however. I think that that was also on the author's website. Been a long time, however.

I just checked it. That was an april's fools joke. The author used a very early screenie and said he removed scrolling and changed all the sprites.
But in the next post he says it was a joke. :D

I was a younger and more gullible man at that time, I suppose ;)

I've always loved this game, and when I play linkplay with my friends, this game is always first choice. It's also nice to support 2 players on the same calc, so 4 people can jump in and join the fun.

I'm glad that you guys have been doing retro features like this, and hope that you can do even more. However, if there gets to be a lot of features because of this, I think that retro features should be judged seperately for the 2012 POTY.

You're very welcome! I was digging through reviews and noticed that people overwhelmingly loved the game as much as I do, which made me rather happy :)
