Calculator Saves Woman's Life
Posted by Astrid & Travis on 7 July 2010, 22:13 GMT

It's not exactly easy to get at the article text, but the Today show has an article on a Tennessee college student whose calculator stopped a bullet for her. She encountered an armed mugger who grabbed her cell phone and fired at her. Fortunately, the shot missed, instead hitting her purse. Her TI-83 Plus (along with some other items in her purse) took the hit and stopped the bullet, saving her life.

Judging by my preferred calculator carrying location of my left pants pocket, the only thing my calculator would be protecting from bullets would be my hip.

If I was programming on it, then most likely it would save me.

We'll all have to start carrying a full vest of calculators just to be safe. Does anybody have any ideas for a calculator helmet, shin guards, and jock strap?

Now that the moment has passed, are you sure it's really gone? Those things are bricks, $10 says it still works.

I bet it's just the screen that's trashed, and if you connected it to a serial link that all its files would be intact.

That way she could recover her favorite quadratic formula program.

Well what if the bullet entered through the top and exited lower down on the backside? If you look how it entered into the purse, the calc would have had its top facing the gun. That surely would have destroyed the processor.

The system doesn't allow comments with just spaces, but it doesn't know about UTF8 nonbreaking space characters (please don't abuse it, though). :-)

Note: this article dates back in 2008, but it doesn't really matter much, since nobody have posted it on calc sites/channels before TI-BANK did this week.

I was shockedy when I saw the calc saved that poor girl life. I would hate to get attacked like this. I'm not sure how I would react if it suddently happened to me.

Wow. I don't know what I would've done either. Hopefully my TI is as quick witted as hers was.
