TI-Nspire OS v2.0 Introduced
Posted by Travis on 8 March 2010, 17:35 GMT

TI has released Version 2.0 of the TI-Nspire and TI-Nspire CAS operating systems and computer software. This release of the calculator software adds a number of enhancements and new features including a new Home Screen, a ScratchPad for quickly performing calculations without having to open a document, support for a new keypad which has a touchpad and alpha keys at the bottom, as well as some new math functions.

The computer software sports a reworked interface with the ability to open multiple documents at once and an explorer panel for quickly transferring files between the computer and calculator.

TI's software page has more information about this update, along with a video and a release notes PDF.

At the risk of bricking my nspire clickpad device I haven't attempted downgrading from the 2.0 update which I have foolishly installed. Does anyone know if you can downgrade now?

Assuming this is an old Nspire which originally shipped with some OS 1.x, you should be able to downgrade, several people have tried it and it works.

But please note that the new devices apparently cannot be downgraded to any 1.x version of the OS. OS 1.x also doesn't support the new keypad.

Thanks, I just found some other sites saying the same thing.

I wonder if the new device has sufficient enough hardware or internal software changes to prevent the use of a clickpad and downgrading. The new hardware may just be a gimic with only coloring and the addition of a battery panel it is entirely possible that the clickpad is compatible. There's no way to tell until it's available.

it works with the old (and better, but not so cool-looking) keypad, except you cannot downgrade from 2.0

So if you have the old style calculator and upgraded to 1.7, then if you upgrade further to 2.0, you can never go back to 1.7? It would seem that there must be some way to format the device to erase 2.0 and then re-install 1.7?

With the old-style calculator, you can upgrade to 2.0 and then downgrade.

With the new-style calculator, the first tests are showing that you can't install an ols 1.x OS even if you erase the 2.0 OS with the maintenance menu.

And if you go to the google ti-nspire site you will find that a lot of people are reporting difficulty upgrading to 2.0. As I understand it, they can update to the trial version but TI doesn't recognize their prior purchase and permanently upgrade them. Isn't that just wonderful. Looks like the people who try to upgrade, are just software testers for TI. Wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that when 2.0 was introduced the TI nspire people were in Alanta having fun instead of being in Texas checking the update process out? So, lets see, at this point there is the 2.0 software that people have trouble upgrading to, new handhelds that are not available, and a rechargable battery that costs extra and no significant math improvement. Wonderful, just ....ing wonderful.

Does version 2.0 loosen the programing restrictions so that good games can now be programmed for the nspire and nspire calculators??

I haven't actually seen this anywhere yet so I'm going to post it:

The 2.0 software supports nested folders.

I know it's a minor feature but I find it useful and know that I've been frustrated with the lack of nested folders before since I like my file organization.

Does anyone know if the new keypad will work with the original Nspire? (Presumably you need OS 2.0, but is the hardware compatible?)

TI has stated that it is compatible but only if the 2.0 software is installed and can be purchased separately.

(The only differences are the key layout/menus, touch sensitivity, and the ability to use the mouse across all applications)

Are you saying that in order to update your original nspire handheld to the latest OS version, you have to buy the software?

No, the 2.0 software is free as is the link software.

The new touchpad keypad will cost money.

The touchpad keypad works only if the 2.0 software is installed on the device.

(If what you were asking about was the computer software that runs nspire stuff, that has nothing to do with the handheld)

So if you have an older nspire, you buy the touch pad, which you somehow install in the handheld? How do you install it? And what do you do to update an older nspire cas handheld?

I don't know what you'd do about upgrading the CAS but the older nspire (non-cas) just needs the free 2.0 OS update, the free connection software for transferring files to and from the computer, and you need to purchase the touchpad and slide it into the hand held.

(This is all just assumed logical process based on TI's release notes)

I guess the older nspire cas is now only good for the junk heap now that TI is finished experimenting with that keyboard style. Meanwhile the older and more powerful ti-89 is like the ever ready bunny. It keeps working and working and working.

You can still have the same functionality as the new device, just update the OS to 2.0 on your CAS

Yeh but there is no way to change out the obsolete keyboard as there is with the plain nspire handheld.

So? The only new feature available with the Touchpad is to use the mouse in every window rather than just the ones where it's useful. All other functionality remains the same in terms of features and math.

If you really want to see the mouse move on your app: go to the app in question, Press Control-Home-7-3, change the "Pointer Speed", and Hit Enter. This has worked about 5% of the time as a bug I found while changing the settings. It allows for mouse control until something is clicked.

So? So if you stupidly bought the old style cas keyboard model while TI was working on it's replacement, you are stuck with it until you shell out the full purchase price for a new one. TI should offer some sort of trade in allowance or replace them like they did for the teachers that went to the recent Alanta nspire conference. It was reported at the nspire google site that at that conference, teachers were able to trade their old nspires for the new models. How's that for "so?"

Don't worry about it, there's no need to buy a new calculator whatsoever. The new keypad just offers a slightly different way of navigating and has a better colour scheme. The new upgrade works just fine on the old CAS, no different to before.

If TI do somehow decide to make the old keypad obsolete then they'd have to release a new update that specifically disables the clickwheel. They'd have no reason to do this other than for the sole purpose of rendering old models outdated and I doubt such actions are legal.
