TI-Boy: TI-83 Plus SE/TI-84 Plus Game Boy Emulator
Posted by Travis on 23 August 2009, 20:00 GMT

Brendan Fletcher is developing another Nintendo Game Boy emulator, this time for the TI-83 Plus SE and TI-84 Plus series. TI-Boy SE features zooming, grayscale graphics, two-channel sound, and saving and loading from appvars. It is in an alpha stage of development at the moment, supporting several games such as Tetris and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, with efforts ongoing to support more titles.

There is currently an issue that prevents the emulator from working on some TI-84 Plus models. The affected units appear to be those manufactured within the last year or two. The exact cause of this incompatibility has not yet been discovered.

For more information and feedback, there is a subforum at Omnimaga and a forum thread at UnitedTI for the project.

Hey, they finally put it in the news!!!

Yeah, it doesn't work on some models, and produces huge files, with some signing issues, but after all, it is a beta.

Key word: finally.

There has been plenty of newsworthy material this year that never made it to the front page. It nice that files get archived regularly, but either no one is submitting possible news, the staff don't browse the forums, or maybe the staff are just overly critical at what constitutes as "news". Therefore, we don't get much of it. The news we do get is extremely belated.

The emulator, however, is a fine piece of work that I had the pleasure of testing out. Grats on the feature, calc84, it's meaning is even more pronounced considering how much of it we see.

I think the main thing recently has been Michael's lack of time. Nikky and I had found several files worth featuring, but we had to rely on Michael to post news, and he never got a chance to do all of it.

Since Michael has retired from news now, and Astrid, Nikky, and I now control it at the moment, we're finally getting the opportunity to push a lot of that stuff through the pipeline.

Well, it turns out that I had emailed MichaelV for a feature, then I reconsidered since it was largely untested and I told him to wait on that. And guess what - it turns out there were problems after all. So yeah, the article now is fine since it mentions the problems with the newer 84+ models.

By the way, the 83+ is not supported, just the 83+SE. Just to throw that out there.

As he says, I would have posted right away except he e-mailed me requesting not to.

But the general problem with news (pre-2009, as this year it was my fault in being slow in getting to things) was that no one e-mails news anymore. There has been a huge shift since I started as news editor. The quantity of news e-mails dropped from tons at the beginning to virtually none for the last several years.

Perhaps a reminder article is needed? "Yes, the staff is alive, active, and they read all of their email. Please email us things that you think are interesting or noteworthy!"

I am one of those people who have problems with this program and any other that uses the TI-83+SE/TI-84+(SE)'s extra RAM pages. I hope they find a fix...

This is awesome, plus it even got sound. Now I wish I had something else than a regular 83+ and a TI-Nspire as working calcs
