2008 POTY Results
Posted by Michael on 6 February 2009, 22:57 GMT

The results for the 2008 Program of the Year competition are now released. Congratulations to all POTY winners and all 2008 featured program authors! Hopefully we will have a larger contest in 2009.

There needs to be a new system for selecting candidates with perhaps more site member involvement. There were plenty of great programs released this year that didn't receive any recognition because they were written in BASIC. It's kind of sad really. Obviously, BASIC has it's limitations, but there are some pretty ingenious ideas that I've seen that are at least worth some sort of pat-on-the-back reward/recognition.

Well the problem with the BASIC programs is that there are so many being uploaded regulary that the good ones gets lost among the bad ones, and because there are so many bad BASIC programs (about 98% of all BASIC games) they don't bother trying them all else they would spend entire days doing so, so basically the only way to have a chance to get a BASIC game featured is to e-mail ticalc.org. I'm unsure if they started checking their mailbox again though. There was a time where you had to email Michael directly, but with the recent hiring of Allynfolksjr and Travis this might have been solved.

And don't spam them with e-mails begging for features, especially not if you're in a programming group. else this might be the last time you or your group ever get featured, if you get featured at all.

Also getting a BASIC game featured is very hard. BASIC games runs slow and most gamers won't see further than graphics, so if you got an ASCII RPG but it has a myriad of features, you really need to be convincing when you write your e-mail. There's only one ASCII RPG that ever got featured in the entire ticalc.org history I think

featprog@ticalc.org is supposed to be the address to email about featured programs, but I don't know whether it's being monitored currently. I know that Nikky actively monitors filearchive@ticalc.org, though, so you should get a response to questions from there (it will be from Nikky since I don't have access to that mailbox).

We're hoping to make some major improvements to the unresponsive email problem we've had for so long some time in the near future. I'm not sure when this will take place, though.
