ticalc.org Hiring Again
Posted by Joey on 8 July 2007, 17:22 GMT

We need new staff members to handle our file archiving and reviews editing. You could be one of the people we're looking for.

The main thing required here is time. We get many files, screenshots, and reviews submitted every day, and it is important that they be processed as quickly as possible.

Experience with multiple calculators is a big advantage; we try not to put a preference on any calculator model or platform. Owning a lot of calculators is not required, but having some general experience is a plus.

Because you will likely be editing a lot of text, excellent written English skills are required.

We're looking for a long term commitment, as well as a high availability. You all know what our users think when there are weeks without updates. If you can work 8 hours a day now, but expect not to be able to keep that up for more than a couple of months, this is not what we want. Expect it to be quite time-consuming, but certainly rewarding.

Finally, if you can increase the staff's demographical diversity, that's a plus, but not a requirement. We encourage people, both male and female, from all countries to apply.

If you're interested, contact us at newstaff@ticalc.org. Please include the following information:

  • Full name
  • Email address
  • Preferred IM screen name and protocol (AIM, MSN, etc.)
  • Age
  • Current level of education (finished or unfinished)
  • Where you live (town/state/country)
  • Approximate amount of time you think you can contribute per week
  • Which calculators you have experience with or access to
  • A quick motivation on why we should pick you
Also, based our previous experience, it's worth mentioning that this is not a paid job.

Update: Applications are due on Friday, July 20, 2007.

This is a very important job that is crucial to the community. I certainly hope ticalc.org can find some committed people to keep this place chugging along :).

Agreed, it's disappointing that the current staff's interest (unlikely) or availability (more likely) has waned.

First of all, I would like to give a big thank you to all of the staffers here at Ticalc. You do a wonderful job!

I think that a position such as this can be tedious and could become monotonous after a lengthy period of time; which could potentially lead to a burnout. Some people find it difficult to tell others when they want out, fearing they may let someone down. We definitely do not want to see our fellow community members burnout and drift away.

It might be better to place a time limit on the position -- say 1 year for example. After this period of time, the current staffer could extend his/her duties if desired. This would provide a "time in service" like the military. When the service period expires, the staffer may get a feeling of accomplishment for completing the commitment.

Keep up the great work!

Agree.

It should be a "try out and see if you like it, and that you can keep it up" period for about 1 month too.

That is not exactly what I had in mind.

I'm sure Ticalc does not have the time nor the inclination for "try outs". Someone either wants to do this job or they do not. If they decide to pursue the position, then I believe a "reasonable" time period should be committed to.

Perhaps the example used of "8 hours a day" should be changed to something more reasonable... like, for example, "8 hours per week"... I highly doubt anybody will consistently be able to work here 8 hours per day, and using that as an example might be a bad idea and might deter some people...

I agree. 8 hours a day may seem a bit steep. I'd love to enter in and edit or post some of the programs.... but i also work some 50 hours a week and am committed to other projects 10 hours a week. but i'd love to enter in some of the programs in some of my spare time.

Yeah, 8 eight hours a day isn't possible for most people who work or have school; Why don't we let several people do it whenever they can? I personally would be happy to "screen" comments and programs several hours a week!

Or you could automatically accept everything, but let users flag down stuff within a week, where it would be immediately removed from the archive, and can be processed by the staff. Then there would be a lot less load...

Eh, there are so many opportunities for short-term abuse that I doubt that would ever be implemented

Hey it is a good Idea but they would have to reveiw the people from time to time.

I think many more peoples would have joined the staff if they only needed to work 3 hours a day. 8 hours a day for many months seems to be way too much for peoples who have other work to do.

Three or fours hours a week is closer to what it would actually be, I think. If the queues are up to date, you only have to deal with around 56 to 60 programs a week (based on stats I've seen) and not more than a dozen reviews.

The article only says that we do not want someone who says he can work 8 hours per day now but won't have any time later. This is to explain through the use of an example that we would like long-term commitment and that the emphasis is on a consistent ability to work rather than what you can do next week.

It does not say anywhere that 8 hours per day of work is expected or encouraged. The people replying in this thread are reading things that are not written.

But the question remains unanswered:

What if I can work 8 hours a day for a few months, but then afterwards I can only work 4 hours a day?

According to the article, I need not apply if that is my situation.

Thanks for correcting me! But still, few people can work consistently for years on end; everyone gets new jobs, new commitments, and no one is going to put that all off for this site. No matter how important it is to the entire Ti-Community...

I'd rather say the long archiving delays explain this move. ;-)

The "8 hour a day" is only an example, so you choose freely how much time you will spend on it. But you will porblably be accepted much easier if you choose to spend more time.

That doesn't mean it doesn't make sense to spread the load, assuming there are enough applicants of course. It's pretty sad to see volunteers turned down when others are being forced to work until they burn out.

Brilliant, distribution of work is always good. Then again, that provides the possibility that one staff member could slack off too much leaving the others to pick up the slack. With only two people, it's more noticeably that one is slacking.
