Sneak Preview of the TI-Nspire CAS
Posted by Michael on 11 December 2006, 14:28 GMT

Atomic Learning has created tutorial videos about the operation of TI's upcoming calculator, the TI-Nspire CAS. Certainly the TI-Nspire CAS is an interesting departure from TI's previous calculator designs.

I sure hope they put a memory card slot on it.

you think they'd be that smart? I don't think it does, I didn't see anything about it.

Although it looks like using it as a calculator could be a pain with the the cursor and everything, the processing power and native grayscale could really open up some new stuff. Maybe we could have much faster and better-looking raycasting engines, or a Linux port, or huge RPGs, or something...

If TI is going "all out" on this new calc, why dont they go further, like a color screen, or actuall sound, before releasing it.

Also, they are making them look more like cell phones, PDA's, and blackberries. Why not add wireless internet capabilities?

Honestly, if they're going to do that, they might as well just take a really cheap Palm device and write a bunch of good math programs for it.

Good idea. I could really use some more stuff for my Z22, still 16MB free!

The Z22 would fit the bill, it's a $99 Palm pillot with OS5 and "24.6M" internal memory (doesn't support memory cards)...not to mention we could then upgrade stuff at our leasure. It uses non-volitile memory so there's no danger of loosing data when the battery dies (from what I understand some others dump everything)

That's a perfect example, I'm sure they could buy them for much cheaper in bulk, then load them with math programs and sell for about the same price as an 89.

and/or sell the software online so those people who have a palm already can load it up cheaper.

And while they're at it, why not call it something other than a "calculator"?

Color for a calculator I can kind of see, but sound?

I know, you *do* have to remember that it's a calculator, not a portable game. ;-) Color could be really useful for drawing graphs, but built-in sound would be pointless - that's what hardware mods are for.

Gaming for my calculator is more important to me that math, but math is important too.

Well I guess the only advantage Nspire has over those devices is that Nspire is allowed on most exams....

I'm sure if they put their minds to it they could write software to solve that and temporarialy limit what features can be used (maybe from the time/date?)

Wireless internet would instantly get this calculator banned from all standardized tests and school exams. Color would be nice for graphing, though, but perhaps too expensive or draining on the battery.

Oh my... I think it is quite ugly. I don't like the mouse Idea either. But on the other hand the greyscale is neat.
In total, I think that they are pushing the definition of "calculator" and that if they are going to make something so big and complicated, they might as well go the whole way and make a mini PC, gameboy-esque thing, etc.

I like the idea someone said above -- get something like the Palm Z22 that's cheap and durable, just write software to do whatever it needs to do. There's enough memory and processing power in a Palm Pillot go do whatever would be needed.

that's fine with me. everyone hate the idea of color calculators, but it's fine with me.
