ticalc.org Tests Ads
Posted by Magnus on 27 November 2006, 20:51 GMT

In order to deal with the possibility of increasing hosting costs and ever-increasing bandwidth needs, ticalc.org has decided to make a trial run with ads on our website. The reason for this is, obviously, to make enough money to pay for the bandwidth being used.

We will attempt to employ the ads in a way that's not intrusive in general. Please let us know your thoughts on the survey to the right.

It's kind of ironic how we get this less than a month after "Calc.org Redesigns Website".

i don't mind the adds so much if they stay off to the side and not so much in the center. just as long as ticalc.org doesn't become like that tigcc message board. that website is a popup nightmare!!! usually at least 5 come up instantly. the adds are also not as bad because they're about calculators, which is life.

There's not much we can do about that, short of paying for ezBoard's paid service (and that isn't going to happen unless YOU pay ;-) - we might also have trouble with the bureaucracy because Thomas lost the password for the "tict" account which is the ezOwner, and the e-mail address he gave then no longer works).

FYI, my custom Firefox installation blocks the ads so that they don't even appear!

Hey guys! I think you have a great idea. I know I honestly don't want ticalc.org to disappear, and if this is what it takes, then hell yeah, do it!
People complain about it taking away from the tone of the website, but they probably don't understand what you guys have done for us to make sure this site is on here. Thanks again.
If there is anything I can do please let me know, I help run a hosting service, and our prices, the ones we use, and the ones we offer are great, if you can go check them out, its my site link, If not, I'll donate... its a worth while endevour... I just hope my fiance agrees... ;)

Keep up the great work guys...

Kris

Oh wow, I just looked and the main site, hostabq.com, is messed up. Thats ok, use this site link, if the other one is still down. That or just type in http://hostwyo.com. Its our sister site, same people, just a different domain...

Sorry about the problem...

Once again, thanks guys,
Kris

I know that ads aren't nice, but they have worked out well on sites like Omnimaga. Also, I think that a couple of ads is not that distracting, and can be helpful if they need money. Do whatever you can to keep TiCalc.org alive.

I was a little puzzled at first--apparently my ad filter was set to block the ads; I had to temporarily disable it in order to see them.

The ones on the sidebar of the main page don't bother me (they're not even noticable). I find the ones on the top and bottom of the comment pages a little annoying, but I think it would merely be a matter of getting used to them. At least they don't appear *within* the content like on some sites--now that is annoying (especially message boards that try to put ads between posts instead of putting them on a separate portion of the page where they belong).

And they're at least related to ticalc.org's content. :-)

The ads dont bother me at all. For a site like this that offers such a great service to the community for nothing to have a few ads that are discrete enough out of the way...well that is just fine by me.

Seriously, this site is ever growing, cost will be ever present and people shouldn't worry so much about it, because as most of you have found, they can be blocked and they arent every place you look!

Go for it ticalc, I don't have a problem with the ads at all!

I agree, ticalc.org will always be the best website for downloading programs on your TI calculator, with so many useful and fun programs it really doesn't matter as long as they don't have ads everywhere and ads like "Shoot Osama Bin Laden and win a FREE* iPod".

...Pokemon King

Agreed, the people who are strongly against this don't seem to understand that you can't just run a big website with tons of members like this one for free.

Same here.

It's not like some pages with pop-ups on pop-ups, flashy annimated ads, ads that pop up in front of the content, ads that pop under the content, and ads with sound...ours are quiet, small, (still no better word) out-of-the-way ads.

Myself, I had to go looking for them and I don't plan to use any adblockers any time soon...popup blockers yes but not adblockers...

If they make enough revenue (which is for the staff to decide) and are not obnoxious (the way they are now is fine with me), then I'd say go for it. Sure, it might look better to have an ad-free site, but hey, there's also such a thing as reality... Congrats to all the staff members (and anyone else who helped out, where there ever donations??) for succeeding in keeping ticalc.org ad-free for 10 years!

One of the great things about Google ads is the fact they're targeted by looking at the page they appear in. For instance, on this page I get ads like these:
- Block Pop-Up Ads
- Article on a Popup Killer
Oh sweet irony. ;)

Hey my post was romoved and I'm not happy. Why didn't you answer my question: Why don't you get ads only from Texas Instruments?" Have them sponsor the page. Your the ones that made TI calcs successful for school.

I feel that, seeing as the programs submitted to the ticalc.org archives are the original work of individual and independent programmers, it is unfair to the BASIC programmer to have his/her program edited by a stranger (let alone a stranger's computer).
