Calc.org Redesigns Website
Posted by Michael on 5 November 2006, 03:37 GMT

It has come to our attention that calc.org has redesigned their website. With the new design and content, calc.org now has greatly increased their relevance to the calculator community today. We applaud calc.org on this great, sensible redesign that has been expected for quite some time. Calc.org has been dormant for far too long!

Does this mean we'll get a new poll soon? The current one sucks, and it hasn't been changed in months!
Who knew there was a community that modified super soakers...

I remember that site, it was still available like a year and a half ago, but I still think that whoever designed it was obviouslyt a programmer, not an artist, the color scheme burns my eyes. the programs and the contents look great though

Besides the horrible animated background, I swear that it unmaximized my browser window and made it shake for a couple seconds first. I'm not hallucinating or anything...

function quakeMe(){
if (parent.moveBy){
for (i=50; i>0; i--) {
parent.moveBy(0,i);
parent.moveBy(i,0);
parent.moveBy(0,-i);
parent.moveBy(-i,0);
}
}
}
quakeMe();

Well, you're definitely right about the shaking of the browser window. A horrible misuse of javascript in my opinion... And that background animation... <goes to stare for hours at a blank wall in an attempt to mitigate the effects of the animation>

That's why I disallowed scripts from moving/resizing/raising/lowering windows.

I also disallow scripts from hiding the status bar, changing the status bar text (kind of a security issue with that), or disabling/replacing context menus (this stops a lot of those stupid "disable right-click to prevent you from copying our precious images" types of scripts on some pages).

These options are all in the standard Mozilla (and FireFox) preferences dialog box. You can disable more stuff in about:config. Search for dom.disable_ in the filter text box.

easy way to get arount the right-click thing:

1. save-as page
2. open in notepad
3. search and delete "mouse"
4. when you find java that mentions mouse and right-click, delete it from tag to tag
5. save changes
6. right click (it will either work or work and produce a random message)

I still think two steps is easier than your six steps:

1. Use Mozilla/Firefox
2. Disable Javascript from doing some stuff you don't like.

Besides, what if the code lies somewhere in an included JavaScript file? You'll need to search in every file until you find the right code to delete (and it's still possible to miss some that way).

It's better to have software that follows your (as the owner of the computer) wishes and not someone else's wishes. (This goes even as far as DRM, which also involves software that obeys someone else and not you, but I won't go into DRM any more in this discussion).

dunno, don't care...I've never had a problem with it yet, just edit the one file and it has to call the script from somewhere...

By DRM are you refering to the Windows Media files that have licences to prevent copying? if so, I know a lot of library audiobook downloads use them and I really don't mind. they play on my mp3 player fine so that's all that matters.

>dunno, don't care

You like saying that, don't you? ;-)

The problem with DRM is that it can be misused (like making it so that you can't even make an extra copy of the CD you legally bought to keep in your car, for example), and takes away some control from the user.

Go to my Web Page link for an initiative to eliminate DRM. It's hosted by the Free Software Foundation, no less.

One of the recent blog entries there reports on a Billboard article, which was picked up by Reuters. The article is titled "Digital rights in question as business model". Finally! More people are getting it that DRM is bad for consumers and for the industry (because consumers don't want DRM, so they won't buy restricted junk).

Correction: it's a "campaign", not an "initiative" (not that it makes a difference). :)

yea, i do use it a lot; dunno, don't care :P

as for DRM, I havn't had any trouble yet, I (rarely) copy cd's and then it's only to put stuff on my mp3 player (sandisk) but I havn't had trouble. As for copying cds, I tried a few to a cd-rw with no problem, just lots of copyright warnings...I could even play it on my dvd player...
