James Vernon Releases a TI-86 Game
Posted by Michael on 3 February 2006, 02:23 GMT

[Banchor: The Hellspawn]James Vernon has returned from the mysterious void of defunct programmers to release Banchor: The Hellspawn, a pleasantly titled RPG for the 86. It features grayscale graphics, six bosses, animated tilemaps, and a storyline that's straight from hell. Literally.

I wouldn't let you take my calculator home to put a screen in it. Maybe put some games on it, but new hardware? Never. I got the use (and a ROM dump) of several other people's calculators when I took them home to put games and Symbolic/Omnicalc on them.

It's how you approach them that counts. It's the salesmanship.

"You want games? Any specific ones?" As you get out the link cable.
"Yeah. Do you have Mario or Gemini or Phoenix?"
"Ummm... I have Phoenix. If you want Mario or Gemini, I'd have to hook your calc. up to my computer at home."
"When can you do that?"
"Whenever. Pick an evening you don't need your caclulator and I'll take it home and load it up."
"Gee, thanks." They give you their calculator. You take it home and dutifully put Mario and a few levelsets and Gemini on their calc., then you update the OS, all their APPs, if they have a Silver Edition you put new APPs on there. Then you take the aforementioned ROM dump.
Finally, you give them their new machine the next day, say "It's all ready," and show them how to open MirageOS (which you have so nicely installed) and how to run Mario and Gemini.

Besides an 83/83 Plus and the actual app, is there anything you need to run Emu8x? Like a rom dump or something?

You need a rom of each calculator you want to emulate.

Accomplishments like this give many of us a new platform to shoot for. He honored me with a prerelease a few days ago. It blows away most other TI RPG's, showing us that things do get better with time, not repititous(?spell).

For another site for files and links to plz see link

You have an IP, not a domain? Seriously, domains cost like $5USD a year.

Anyway, this makes me wish I did not hate the 86 menu style as much as I do. Though that is a discussion for a time long past. (link - second thread)

Yeah, ok: rbpx.info. Easy, done. Back on topic: I did a hex dump a found a few neat things, but am stuck trying to beat the 4th boss. Are there any special objects / skills needed. He keeps killing me. I'm guessing "cheating" got me there with low stats. Any advice?

Shame on you for hacking! :)

Belkath (the Swamplands boss) is a pain to beat, but there are no special items you must have to win. However, make sure you have the Light Armor which will reduce your damage taken, and the Superior Sword to inflict more damage than the Blunt Sword.

Other than that, just make sure you have all available heart containers/pieces so far in the game.

I wrote some machine language programs (in hex, not assembler) for the TI-86 back when I used it a lot...this makes me feel like uploading some, but none of them were all that great (except maybe the Hebrew display one, but I doubt that would be of much use to anyone here, & the color one, but I do not wish to incur the wrath of the staff).

Looked at Randy's site, saw the screenshot! It's real, or a color calc with an 86 case.. Guy, your file would be VERY welcome on my server. Anytime, just take 10 seconds and upload it.

If such power can be harnassed without ruining the LCD, the discovery of color will make Randy more revered than the ZShell team.
