Emu8x Released
Posted by Jon on 30 October 2005, 17:07 GMT

Michael Vincent has released "Emu8x," a new emulator that emulates the TI-82, 83, 85, 86 calculators. What makes this new emulator unique is that it is designed to run on the TI-83+ SE/84+/84+ SE calculators, as opposed to running it on your computer. You can now choose which one of your favorite Z80 calculators you would like to run, and now be able to run it anywhere you go! The included manual provides lots of information for setting up and using the many features of Emu8x.

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOODD THIS IS SOOOO KEEEEEEWWWWWLLLLLL!!11!!1!!1!1!1oneone Too bad it wont run ASM programs well on the 86, I havent tried with 85 and 82 but maybe its cuz its too demanding for our lil 15 MHz CPU :D

i am wondering if micheal is planning to optimise it for speed in the future?

Hmm...well ON messes with the mem a bit, swapping in RAM pages and installing interrupt handlers and stuff, so I'm not sure if it would work on there anyways.

Does it run them, just slow? Oh well, you can't have it all...

On another note, that's the first time I've seen someone else spell "cool" like that. I have a t-shirt that says "Lewk" on the front and "Kewl" on the back (same letters mixed around).

It is optimized for speed. Terribly so (you'll see when the source code is released).

It's slow because take for example the simplest instruction like "nop". On a regular Z80 it takes 4 t-states. Well in an emulated Z80, you burn 50 or 60 t-states just reading the byte and figuring out what instruction it is. Then you do nothing, and then have to increment the program counter and loop back.

Did you think I waved my hand and generated a binary out of thin air or what? :)

I am in total agreement.

However, I don't know if anyone else is having the same problem, but when I try to add a ROM to the emulator.bin file, the java program just hangs. It finds the ROM and recognizes its type, but then just sits there. Any ideas?

I really like emu8x on my ti84+se. It does run slow, but it is still a great program. I wanted to use a homemade parallel link cable, VTI, and emu8x to give my friend, who has an 86, some programs. Small programs, like Ztris, worked fine, but larger ones messed up when sending from VTI. I want to know if the ti86.sav file that VTI makes can be broken down into the TI86RAM appvars to eliminate the linking from VTI to emu8x and if so, how?

No need for an answer. I found that if you use TiLem instead of VTi it will work, at least if your computer supports the link cable that you are using.
