That it is. Actually, I think it's fun figuring out how to do things in BASIC with such large constrictions on speed, space, etc. Programming in BASIC can help you think outside of the box, if you take it far enough.

Definitely. Just look at all those TI-BASIC optimization lists everywhere...

i think a lot of people don't realize the true potential of basic. if you think about it, basic has some commands that asm doesn't, such as if, and, or, etc. i guess you can have if statements in asm using

ld a,((var))
cp (number)
call z,label

but still no 'or', or 'and' statements. basic can also perform math operations. (asm can, but it's a pain)
I think there should be a contest for basic programs using asm (programs or libraries) I ussually do some programming in asm, then run the subprogram in the main basic program, since i know basic flunetly and know just a little asm.
basic really does have good potential. there are ways to produce fast basic, such as only using while or repeat statements instead of if's. Basic is majorly under rated. i think if people realized that, basic games (and misc. programs) will be better. Also, on 89's and higher, basic runs faster than on the 83/83+series calcs (which are the most poular)
I really think that basic is a great language, with its simplicity AND its flexibilty. So go program in basic, and make it fast...if you know what i mean

The contest is for the 83 through 84+ calculators. It should be able to run on an 83, probably.

That is incorrect. The contest is for any calculator 82 through 86. The programs will all be tested on a real calculator (no VTI!) of that model (I am not sure if this is true for the Silver Editions since the only difference in functionality is more memory).

Yes it will be, I own the real hardware, so might as well put it to good use during the judgement of all submitted programs. Also this contest is only limited to any TI Model listed on the signup page form.

Too bad the 89/92+ are left out, since their BASIC is quite powerful--I bet people could come out with pretty cool programs with those platforms.

I shouldn't think so. After all, I live in B.C. and had no problems entering the assembly contest (and winning). Just mentally replace "state" with "province" and "zip" with "postal code" and you'll do okay.

I don't think canada is the problem, if someone from europe or any other continent other than north america wins that contest, would they send the price there? Or is that america-only contest cause there isn't option country? If it is they should mention it.
