Happy Pi Day!
Posted by Michael on 14 March 2005, 03:00 GMT

Happy Pi Day! That's right, the most sacred nerd holiday has returned: March 14th, affectionally known as Pi Day to millions of people around the world. Last year we didn't have enough material for a dedicated Pi Day article, but I've managed to collect a few things this time. First, some of you (sadly) may not have yet voraciously scoured the internet for all things pi, and perhaps have not yet seen the awesome Pi-Search Page. You can find the position of your telephone number, social security number, or other fun numeric sequence inside the first 100 million digits of pi.

On the more creative fronts, a few years ago I created a song based upon pi, titled "Lost in Pi Land." Each note (A-G#) corresponds to a particular digit 0-9. Those of you with perfect pitch can transcribe the notes and find out how many decimal places of pi are in the piece. I might just be extremely biased when I say this, but this would make excellent background music for all of your Pi Day parties.

Lastly, we will be having informal Coordinated Pi Shouts in #tcpa on EFNet at 1:59:26 PM in each time zone. If you are not sure of how to get on IRC, please read our IRC page. Remember folks, that's coordinated pi shouting every hour on the :59:26. Once again, have a happy Pi Day and we'll shout "Pi!" together on IRC every hour.

For those of you who haven't, please see the movie "Pi". I'm sure that a lot of the nerds in this community (myself included) will find themselves connecting with the themes. Click the link below my name to read the IMDB page about the movie.

You *do* realize that making the server "localhost" in your URL makes it so only you can see the page, right?

How did you mess up on the second one?? Ususally it's the first one that's messed up on, and after you hit submit you correct the mistake and hit submit again....

But you only get half of it, because otherwise it would be a 2pi, not a pie. ;-)

The string 13371337 was found at position 50222224 counting from the first digit after the decimal point. The 3. is not counted.

Spring break? We never got a Spring Break. All we got was one day off school, and I used the whole day to work on a Physics project. So it was hardly a "break."

Off-topic, but this week, I also had the AIME (got a 6/15, meh), my USAMTS Round 4 submission, and the SAT. Add Pi Day, a huge Physics project, and a school math competition, and that makes up my extremely busy week. Spring break does not exist. :(

Btw, I think the first string of numbers everybody typed in was "1337."

The only proper time for Spring Break is Easter Week.
The only proper thing to happen during Easter Week is Spring Break.

The two are mutually inclusive as far as I'm concerned.

I _only_ did my home phone number in 7 and 10 digit form... The 10 digit sequence is not found in the first 200M digits. :'(

well, the chances that it would be in there is:
200,000,000 : 10^10, which is about a 2% chance that a 10 digit sequence is in pi (assuming entirely random numbers). I wonder if "14159265358979323846" is in there... ;)

I tried my phone number, birth date (four forms of it), ss#, address, and the first 7 numbers of the fibonacci sequence (11235813) before I even thought to try 1337....
