The catch is that, while it is itself Open Source / Free Software, it requires the proprietary Java VM to run. (I haven't checked whether it works with GCJ/GIJ, but the author says it relies heavily on Swing internals, so I doubt it.)

I see. It's a nasty trap too! I've had similar trouble with using free software, and finding out that the part that I need requires another part to be paid for. It's a very common problem that never fails to piss me off. >:(

Mmmm... I've never had this problem.

txtrider is a good program, but it needs a kernel. A while ago, I saw it crash all the time on my classmates' calculators, but a good part of the problems are definitely due to dirty DoorsOS, which they used.
Hib-Text and Hib-View don't need a kernel, but Hib-View is known as unstable.

Both TxtRider and Hibview works fine with modern PreOS kernel.
I didn't encounter any problems.

I don't mean to be an ass, but why not just use MS Word and the NoteFolio APP? Oh, right, you have to pay for Notefolio... unless you bought a TI Keyboard or an 89T. :P

No you don't. Notefolio is free for all calcs, and the MS Word converter is free, too. For those w/o MS Word, there is a standalone viewer and converter. But, like WordRider (and everything else), it is only for Windows and maybe Linux. No Mac support. Except TI-Connect proper (in which case the Mac version is better than the Windows version).

And yes, I checked: the .jar binary does not work on Mac OS X. I'm going to play with the sources some, but I'm not that good with Java. (I have Java 2 1.4.2_05).

So far for "write once run anywhere"... TIGCC is written in C and it works fine on OS X. The Java stuff is supposed to just work, but looks like it doesn't...

Does anyone know HOW to use MS Word to put pictures WITH text? Can color pictures be easily converted into the notefolio files as black and white, of the appropriate definition? Does notefolio even handle text with pictures? Does greyscale work in this anywhere? Are my questions all just stupid, or do some of them make make a little sense?

Didn't think so. I read txtrider's readme and understand slightly more now. I'll have to try this thing before I ask any more questions. I don't want to sound like a complete idiot ALL of the time. ;)
