68k POTY Voting Opens, Again
Posted by Michael on 19 December 2004, 16:25 GMT

Some of you may have noticed programs missing from yesterday's 89/92+/V200 POTY survey. A significant number of programs were accidentally excluded. Since the list was already extremely long, we have decided to split 68k POTY voting into two surveys. After both have concluded, we will take the top programs from each and present a third survey that will determine the 89/92+/V200 Program of the Year.

Because this means that we will have to run four surveys before the end of the year, each one will be open for a shorter time (about 3-4 days). Be sure to check frequently so you don't miss your chance to vote.

Good thing you guys decided to fix the problem with some wrongly excluded programs. But however, are you throwing out the old poll? I'm assuming you are.

Out of those choices, I still am going with Corrupted Memory.

Which programs were "wrongly excluded"?

Apparently different staff members interpret "All featured programs from 2004" differently.

Grammatically, you may be right, but MV's interpretation makes more sense.

Last year all featured programs that were actually added to ticalc.org from past years but were made featured since the time ticalc.org started the POTY were not included in the voting. That is with the exception of Dodger(TI-86) which didn't even have a poll since it had no contendors. If tankers doesn't show up this is probably the reason...consistency. However don't ask me why, I didn't make the lists last year.

Something makes more sense than the information available to us in written word? Congratulations, you've transcended human knowledge.

Don't get me wrong, though. I'm satisfied with what we've worked out.

The written word can be read more than one way. The phrase we are referring to can be and was read in more than one way. Since that article was written in Michael's words, and Michael thought that it meant "all (featured programs) from 2004," we can clearly assume that most people read it that way as well.

(also replying to several other comments you have made lately)

I'm sure many users here just LOVE it when a staff member communicates in a demeaning manner to them. Congratulations, you've made several people dislike you.

Like I said on the last poll before it was deleted, I really ought to continue work on Corrupt. It turned into one of my dead projects, just as I feared in the beginning.

Like you said, the list is quite long... I might recommend combining those 3 voxel programs by the same author into one vote, in the survey part II. It seems like it would be the best thing, otherwise the voting would be kinda spread out for those, probably.

though I don't own one, I'll still vote for a 68k program... the one and only reason to have such an expensive calc are the great games produced by the ticalc.org community. other than that, i'll stick with my 84, thank you.

why couldn't we do this with the 83's? or categorize them, like best math program, best RPG, best shell, etc. so POTY is more objective?

The only reason this one was split was because there are so many. I think the ticalc staff got a little "feature-happy" this year :)

ya, but before some games didnt get featured that deserved to, so i think that can be a good thing.

That's not it entirely. It's the continued spread of the dominion of TIGCC over the world (sorry I just finished watching LOTR) that has driven the production of hundreds of amazing games for 68k. You should look at some of the TIGCC games that didn't get featured. There are plenty that were lost in the tides. It really has been an amazing year for calculator games.

thats exactly why i bought an 89, but after i got it i found out it can do a lot more than just play cool games. it can solve equations with variables in it, it can factor things for you, expand equations, and whole bunch more stuff. the 89 is the best.

Well yeah, unless you've ever needed to do some sort of algebra, in which case the 89 is pretty handy. solve() is just about the greatest math tool you can have in your pocket, right along with the symbolic differentiation and integration. But I just use mine to play Phoenix.

God I love solve()! Unfortunately, I can barely do tests without it anymore, because I have become so addicted.

i have also become addicted: I used to use use about 49 programs i had written on my 83+ that simplified different types of algebraic equations, now i dont use them anymore: infact, I HAVE FORGOTTEN HOW!!!

omg, i hope they dont ban the 89 calc on the SAT, i plan on buying one to carry my 92+'s functions there (QWERTY keyborads not allowed on SAT)

if they ban the 89, then i am ruined! LOL! :P

Ironic when you see how few '86 programs were featured :-/...

Really? I don't see it as contrary to what was expected or intended. The 89 has a bigger screen, a faster processor, more memory, better flicker-free grayscale support, an immensely powerful CAS, and the ability to handle compiled C code. It shouldn't be surprising that the best programs are coming out on the 68k series.

For some time, the TI-86 was way more popular as a game development platform than the TI-89. But then TI discontinued the 85/86 line and marketed everyone into either the 83+/84+ or the 89/92+/V200 line, so there aren't many TI-86 developers left.

TI discontinued the TI-85. The TI-86 is still in stores. In fact, a frien of mine bought one just last year.

But there has been no new calculator of the 85/86 series for ages and TI is no longer actively marketing the series. Sure, you can still get one if you really want, but most people will get either a 83+/84+ series calculator or a high-end (89/92+/V200 series) model, because these are what TI recommends nowadays.

ti-86 or better stuff?
Joe Somebody  Account Info

actually, two years ago i bought an 83+. I really dont like simplicity or anything close to it, and i needed a QWERTY keyboard, so i have now bought a 92+ calculator cuz i didnt like the Voyage200 (just recently) (they moved the keys to be more pc style, which dont work too well on calcs - i hated the pc keyboard on calcs - thats y i bought a calc rather than using the ti92+sdk to emulate :P )

so, u're right, most people dont want no "middle class" calculator...
