Ten Terabytes Transferred
Posted by Michael on 4 December 2004, 04:19 GMT

December 4, 2004 is a date that will be remembered around the world forever. Parades will be held in the streets of New York, Paris, and Pago Pago. Future children will celebrate each year with their parents, holding wild calculator festivals. Why? Because this evening ticalc.org passed further into the realm of undeniable awesomeness with a major bandwidth milestone.

During the period from April 14, 1997 to December 4, 2004, ticalc.org transferred 10 TB of data. That's ten terabytes (equivalent to 10,240 GB). We are currently averaging 6.12 GB of data transferred per day, or 42.82 GB per week. You can find all of these statistics and others on our Web Server Statistics page. A few other interesting pieces of trivia:

  • Hypothetically, it would take a TI-83 Plus approximately 291 years to transfer 10 TB through the link port. If you used TI Connect, it'd probably take a millennium and then crash halfway through.
  • The average video rental store holds about 8 TB worth of video data.
  • It is estimated that the books of the Library of Congress would amount to 20 TB if digitized. Thus, ticalc.org has transferred "half a Library of Congress".
We wish to thank all of the people who have visited ticalc.org and contributed to this milestone.

Not if they own the server and have a decent internet connection. I would assume they're hooked up to T1 or better, which would adequately supply enough bandwidth to serve the 1 TB they've used in the past years.

man that would still be pretty pricy, and it would have to be almost flawless. o well its still incrdibly amazing bandwith most servers only allow you to have 2-3gb

I think that not even 1 on 100.000.000.000 of those bytes comes from downloading those silly ti-83 basic programs you see every day !!!

No you're right...it is fun! The best is the yearly report! Anyone that says the community is dying needs to look at that to be proven wrong. Now the community might have reached its potential to providing original programs, but definitely is not dying.

Hey, has anyone used the statistical regressions function on their calculators with the data on the ticalc.org server statistics page to predict the number of requests in the coming years? I think I'll try it.

Ooh, that's an idea...make sure you use exponential regression!

OK, I predict:

2005: 254977264 requests
2006: 342554343 requests
2007: 460211534 requests

Which Regression function did you use to calculate that? I'm too lazy to try any of them.

I'm guessing linear or exponential.

I tried it with the quarterly data, but it was tricky because I got totally different estimates depending on the regression model. When I plotted the data, it looked so randomly scattered it was hard to figure out which regression model was most appropriate.

Try 'em all and check the R^2 value.
