Interesting...I was wondering when they were going to do something like this. I'd say this will make a lot of schools very happy, and a lot of kids very unhappy (no more free calcs).

It's too bad they're only doing this for 84+'s; most schools use 82's and would probably prefer that.

Actually most schools use 83s ... but in my case they need to replace them all. I hope my school looks into these.

How long till we see these calcs on Ebay ?

TI should offer calculator stealing "enforcement" policies... where they look up and hunt down people who steal these calcs. Each calculator could have GPS devices installed, paint that rubs off on fingers, etc.

I'm sure that would be quite expensive, though. :)

Cellular phones for the last half a decade have had a GPS device built in to track the phone...and some of these phones were rather inexpensive. I can see that a school would pay $120 for an 84 with a tracking device, as the original 83+ only cost $80.

You're forgetting two things. The phones are well, phones. They already possess all the communications equipment to report their position.

Second, cell phones are heavily subsidized by providers. They'd be $200 if you didn't have to sign up for a contract.

Well, I meant the people they'd have to hire to actually "hunt down" and catch the calculator crooks, and all that stuff. :)

All celular phones can be tracked by two directional celular recievers. No GPS necessary. So, if you are trying not to be found, turn of your cell!

GPS only works in a clear view of the sky with power. Remove the batteries, no more GPS. If the calculator is inside, no signals from sattalite, no GPS. won't work. Another problem, a simple GPS goes for almost $200. Ti 84+ SE EZ Spot with GPS: $350. Not exactly cost efective.

Nice new colors. What happens when someone pockets a calc though? The bright yellow isn't exactly going to stand out through someones clothes. Perhaps radio trackers could be placed in them.

You can find better prices for the standard models elsewhere. It also presumably doesn't include the official TI USB cable. Nevertheless I'd be up for it.

I bought a ti-89 from a teacher that has one of those viewscreen ports on the top. I'm sure finding a teacher to sell you one wouldn't be terribly difficult.
