Virtual TI Passes 500,000 Downloads
Posted by Michael on 19 October 2004, 04:05 GMT

Virtual TI v2.5, currently our most downloaded file of all time by a wide margin, has passed the 500,000 downloads mark. This achievement is even more amazing when you consider the fact that VTI hasn't been updated in over four years. Congratulations to author Rusty Wagner on constructing the Egyptian pyramid of TI calculator programming.

Pyramid as in "strong and solid" or pyramid as in "ancient and crumbling"?

Or pyramid as in strong, enduring, rapidly decaying pile of rock with a dead smelly dude inside?

I wasn't here when PYRAMID was popular (nor could I find many allusions to it in previous articles, although I've only looked through the *earlier* half). What is its significance?

There really is no significance; it's just something bored people do, like "First Post!".

Would it really be that hard to combine two programs together...?

BTW, I know nothing about how to program this stuff.. Only BASIC and part of ASM =)

I've never used VTI. I've just always stuck with the TI Flash Debugger (also free). Is there anything that VTI can do that the Flash Debugger can't? I've read the review and it seems that VTI can't emulate flash ROM. The only reason I would think to use the VTI is if I needed to emulate calculators other than the 83+. But still, some 83 users use VTI. Why?

Like me. VTI is really flexible; you can create different skins and load different ROMS. Otherwise, I'm not sure. I guess it's mainly a matter of preference.

I guess I don't care about skins since I can't download them to the real thing. The different OS's sound interesting, but could you load a custom OS to a real TI-83+?

You can upload new OS's to your 83.
<offtopic> The wierdest thing happened today; Mirage was all wierd and messed up looking on this kid's 83+. We reset and sent a new OS to the thing, but it still was messed up. Any ideas?<\offtopic>

not crash often. not crash the IDE. TIGCC can work whith VTI.

Re: Re: Re: Virtual TI Passes 500,000 Downloads

The older version of the flash debugger would crash, but the new version doesn't. The only crashes I get are when I screw around with the asm. Even then the new version seems to be able to keep from crashing.

Though, I have to admit. There is one silly bug that exists in the flash debugger. The scroll bars of the GUI (not IDE) aren't accurate. If you move the slider to the bottom, the content only goes about quarter way. However, keyboard scrolling can get around this, so it really is nothing more than a minor annoyance.

I thought TIGCC worked only for the upper level calculators (like the 89 and 92). I'll have to look into this again. I'm only interested in things that apply to 83+ users. I do hope, however, that TI makes an emulator for their other calculators since they don't seem willing to provide all the information about the hardware to allow a 100% complete emulator.

E. g. it doesn't support undocumented instructions, so it's completely useless to me, since my programs need them.
