Desolate Released for the 83+
Posted by Michael on 18 August 2004, 18:56 GMT

[Desolate] Previously I reported on Desolate, a highly acclaimed RPG for the 83, and commented that "a 83 Plus version is planned shortly." Well, one hundred and thirty one days later, I'm happy to announce that the 83 Plus version is safely nestled in our archives. Just like its 83 counterpart, it features flickerless grayscale, 70 rooms, 26 items, 7 puzzles, and many other goodies.

I just saw this file a few minutes ago in the recently uploaded file list. This is great!!! I've been badly wanting to play Desolate ever since I saw the Venus version for the 83. If I'm absent for a few days, you'll know the reason. :-)

Hey, glad to see you guys showing interest in this game :).

Remember, its my first and only game and due to the amount of data in this baby it isnt very long :(. It shouldnt take you anywhere near a few days to get to the end. Well, it might take a little while to pass 100% :).

Still i hope you enjoy it, after all that is why it was made ... for peoples enjoyment :P.

This game looks great. I usually don't play and RPGs because I don't spend huge amounts of time on my calculator, but I will have to try this one.

It's not an RPG, it's more like adventure/little action.

Well if you asked someone what a RPG is I believe they would say that it is an adventure. Also it is described as "a highly acclaimed RPG" not a higly acclaimed adventure game.

And Role Playing Game implies more then one character that youcan control. Or is there?

It certainly doesn't apply multiple chars, or do you want to state that Zelda or Silver are not rpg's

Adventure games are practically the same as RPGs. The main difference is the focus of the game. Adventures focus on story flow and RPGs on the development of the characters.

I always kinda thought of them more as adventure games.

How about we settle this debate by creating a new class of game called 'RPG Adventure'.

It was a little short (it took me a few hours to finish the first time, and another hour to go back and finish it again while getting all the *good* awards), but it was still great!!!! I also really liked the hidden features ("you don't have time to play with this right now", and the strange religion of the crew/aliens). Any plans for a sequel?

Does it use any kind of compression? If not, Lite86 II would probably cut down a lot on the size.

Well, the maps are RLE compressed and the text (which there is heaps of) is compressed with huffman.

BTW, the second time I played it, I made a map, and only counted 67 rooms (but I'm sure I've gone everywhere possible!). Are there some parts I've missed?

Okay, that does not look like vti moving fast for gray there. Is that really working grayscale on the 83+?

Yes it works fine on hardware, but the game is not compatible with VTI. Quality/speed varies from calc to calc, also battery strength plays a part. Be sure to mess around with the interrupt settings at the start, to find one that works good for your calc.
