HP launches new calculator
Posted by Magnus on 25 April 2004, 20:29 GMT

HP has launched what they claim to be the worlds most powerful RPN scientific calculator. This is HPs first launch of a RPN calculator since 1991.

This calculator is a "classic" calculator, and not a graphing one. It's a calculator directed at scientific usage, and has a clear focus on these functions. It supports the popular Reverse Polish Notation (RPN) for calculation, as well as normal algebraic notation. It's programmable and holds 31Kb of memory.

Funny, but I think it would've been more funny if you hadn't capitalized the "doesn't". It would have been more subtle and you could have confused a bunch of people...

I know. I thought of that after I submitted it. It would have been funnier. Oh well, maybe ticalc.org should make some kind of edit feature on their postings....

Link above showcases the calculator, including a photo, price, and a comprehensive list of features and capabilities. Looks interesting, and surely is unique among scientific calculators. Obviously it is inferior to all graphing calcs, but for a casual student who wants advanced math functionality without a large price tag, it looks like a good deal.

Wait, so you can program this thing? With that small of a screen? Hmmmm... (ponders)

My dad has an old four-function HP from the 70s that is programmable, and it only displays numbers.

It has one line and plugs into the wall because the internal battery is shot.

Two lines? No thanks. I think I'll stick with my good old TI-85.

Why did Magnus even bother to post this? This website is called TIcalc (exaggerates the T and I) right?

Agreed. Also its strange that they post it for HP's lowest end programmible, but not for HP's best (which has much better hardware then any TI, except for the screen).

Lets have more TI news please. When can I buy a TI-89 TI?

I already found one on ebay. It's 139, if anyone's really interested. There'll be more in the next few days, but that's cheaper than you could buy it at walmart. Just type ti-89 titanium

Hopefully, that price might be lowered as it comes out and stores start giving rebates for it.....

When? They've been out for a long time. Well, a couple months.

However, the TI-84+[SE] came out _very_ recently.

I say we take the HP 33s and the TI-30X IIS, put them in a small ring, dress them in fancy wrestling duds, and watch them honor battle to the death. A Casio FX-300MSPLUS can be the referee. We could call it "The Scientific Calculator Showdown." We could sell tickets, show it on HBO, maybe even have a fancy story line where both calculators get in the ring and talk RPN smack to each other....

Here's the story (man this could be a tv series):
HP 33: Haha, I shall pwn j00, stupid TI.
TI-30X IIS: Oh ya? Well...what's 10^1000?
HP 33: Mwhaha, you can not confuse me with math problems, for I am a calculator (pushes his own buttons and types out the question).
HP 33: AHHH OVERFLOW!!! ILL GET YOU NEXT TIME TI-30X IIS!
TI-30X IIS: Once again, my great powers have saved the land. And remember kids, RPN should only be used in the name of good.
Casio FX-300MSPLUS: My hero!

You are right about the 33s though. You get 'OVERFLOW' :-D

The HP beside me says it begins with 4023872600..... Sorry I'm not typing the whole thing.

Does TI have an programmible 'scientific' calulators? Or even any scientific calculators with an equation solver. That'd be great for exams where I'm not allowed a graphing calculator.

Nah, it would be useless to type the whole thing. After all, it would have 249 zeros at the end of it, right? And that's just the end of the number. 1000! would have WAY too many digits to casually type out.

And the TI-89 can't process 1000!, if I'm thinking correctly.

It can't. The 83+ App Cabampa might be able to....I haven't tried it.

I wrote a C program to find the factorial of 1000, and even that wouldn't work :(
