TI-News Closes
Posted by Michael on 16 February 2004, 01:45 GMT

It is a sad day in the TI community as we have learned that TI-News (link points to the web archive) has permanently shut down. A combination of technical issues and a lack of interest prompted this closure. We wish to thank Tim Buckingham and all of the former TI-News staff for their contributions to the community.

Man, that was a good site. I should have saved the front page on my desktop as a memory of it :(

ti-news.net seems to be working (or at least being worked on), however! Check out the link.

Well, that site is not Ti-News either, it is a new (but calculator-related) site using the domain name. It looks similar to Ti-News, but it's not the same.

I own ti-news.net, originally it was used as a test site for the CMS that was being developed for gdcalc.org

Now that I think of it... If anyone would like to work together with me in putting the ti-news.net domain to some sort of good use, feel free to email me at jake@gdcalc.org

But, on the other hand, if there are technical issues than it can't be avoided.

A lot of sites are currently hosted on the server that TI-News was on. It was originally a dedicated server just for Ti-Files, but that changed a long time ago.

To answer your question, the virtual host for TI-News.com was removed from the Apache conf. file on the server, but the domain still points to the IP of the server. As a result, the site you're seeing now is displayed. Do a dns lookup on the server, and then type the IP you get into your browser. You'll see the same page. It's the default, and every other site on the server necessarily uses a virtual host.

When I log onto ticalc.org the first thing I look at is the TI-NEWS. How are they having trouble now if it has been a part of ticalc.org for over 7 years. Is it a problem with the new server? And if so, how is it that it has been working since the server was upgraded?

It's ok. We all feel stupid sometimes (or lots of times for some of us ;-).

Look at it this way: it took you only 3 minutes to find your mistake.

I've discussed this above, but I'll say it here as well. The server that hosted TI-News also hosts many other sites. The TI-News virtual host was removed from the Apache conf. file and the files associated with the site are no longer on the server. The domain still points to the IP of the server, though, so when you visit it, you get the "default" site instead of a virtual hosted one. Nobody has put up a replacement site nor have they hijacked the domain. :)

In other words, TI-news said to their server, "Don't host us any more" and the server says "alright" and replaces them with its default page, which happens to be whatever that was. I didn't check it out.

No, that's not it. If that were really its default page, it'd say something like "The domain name TI-News.net is for sale! BUY IT OR ELSE!!!! BUY THIS DOMAIN SO WE CAN EARN MONEY, AND INFECT YOUR COMPUTER WITH ADWARE AND SPYWARE IN THE MEANTIME!!! MWAHAHAHAHA...." or something to that extent. And it doesn't.

You don't seem to understand what was meant by "virtual hosts"... With apache, you can have any number of sites hosted on one computer, with one IP, so long as each request comes from a different domain. When the "ti-news.com" heading in the config file was removed, the site that is a "normal host" (not part of the virtual host settings, hence the 'default') is displayed... You're thinking of the domain squatters pages...
